Bit torrent is great for sharing stuff. But it consumes too much electricity if your powerful desktop machine just runs the whole day for downloading stuff. So I am looking for something more energy efficient.
I was attracted to the ezdownloader from another maker. But it price tag was a little high and I guess there must be a competitor out there with a better price/feature ratio. So I researched the US Market and then the TW and HK market. There are definitely similar products with much cheaper price. Finally I came to this one - the Sapido 3G N+ Wireless Audio/Video Router.
What this is:
- A wireless router - that serve as any other router out there, you may just hook it up to a DSL/cable modem to get wifi at your home/office.
- A NAT server - you may attach a USB drive to it and access the drive as as SAMBA network drive. The drive can be format to NTFS. I believe the limit is 1.5TB. I am using only a 250GB so it is good enough for me.
- Webcam server - I haven't tested this feature yet. As the spec indicates, you should be able to plug in a webcam and access it from a webpage. It sounds fun, isn't it?
- Finally, the most important factor - A BT downloader. You access this router via a webpage interface, upload the .torrent file, and it will download the contents for you! It allows a list of 20 torrents, with 2 active download running. Unlike the ezdownloader, where you must use the vendor's website to control the download, this router will be access from the LAN only. Depends on how your LAN gateway is set up, you can assign this router as your Web server at your current IP. If you do that, then you may access the router from outside (anywhere over the world).
The set up was not straight forward for non-geeky users. But just be patient and you should be done in 30 minutes. There is no manual provided - only a big folded piece of the instruction paper with diagrams. Since my broadband gateway is already wireless, I use this a wireless Access Point. Yes, you can use this a wireless "client" to your existing wireless network. Then itself can be used as a wired + wireless access point. There are four ethernet ports available to use. I hook my PS3 and XBOX to it and it works great!
The samba network drive can be detected by the PS3 automatically. I am able to watch the movies directly from the PS3 without doing anything extra.
The Pros:
- A lot of feature to play with.
- Wireless AP (the 3G network feature is not tested, but could be a big plus to someone)
- Support BT
- Support Samba
- Upgradable firmware
- Web access from outsideThe Cons:
- BT page not compatible completely with all web-browsers. It likes Firefox and IE more.
- Can't handle Asian character sets - all characters of the downloading file name will be converted to hex byte representation of the character. It makes reading back of the file name difficult sometimes. Not a problem if the file was created before hand and copied to the USB drive.
- The saved path sometimes can not be handled by Windows explorer, if you plug the USB drive to your PC. However, you may use a ftp client to ftp to the router and access the drive to rename the files before moving back to Windows.
=> It definitely can do some improvement on the file system.
Conclusion: overall this product is great product of integrated features. However, I did spend some effort finding it. I think the sales department from Sapido should promote it a little better so a bigger consumer crowd can see its availability.

I had to post this review when I read the other 2 bad reviews. This device seemed shoddy as well, i.e. I had to reboot it sometimes several times a day to get it to work, until I realized that it wasn't the device's fault at all. It was the lousy recycled cable modem that the Time Warner provided me. I confirmed this with a few tech support calls and Time Warner replaced the modem (they're fault so I didn't have to pay extra for the service call.) After that my Linksys WRTP54G router has been 100% perfect. In fact, it does static IP w/ Port forwarding (unlike the D-Link) which is essential for the fastest peer-to-peer downloads if you like downloading from multiple computers wirelessly. And who cares if the router has firewall or not. Your PC already has one that works fine. I highly recommend this Linksys WRTP54G.

6" Cat5e RJ-45 (F) to Dual RJ-45 (M) Ethernet Line T-Adapter Review

My thanks goes to Bruce of seattle for his review of a similar item (one male plug to two female). He accurately "hit the nail on the head". I've read other buyer's reviews saying that these things don't work. Well, if you use it as it was intended, they do work! (see ref. attached).
These devices make use of the fact that only four of the eight wires in the ethernet cable are used. So as you can see from the drawing above, this unit uses all eight conductors in the cable if you have two signal sources like from a router. They do NOT under any circumstances "split" one signal.
I ordered two of these to give my son the ability of havivg his computer plus Xbox connected to the internet at the same time. You'll need a router with an extra port. My computer is connected to my broadband service (cable modem) thru a four port router. Three of the ports were being used. I took this "splitter" and plugged into the port being used by his computer and put the second plug into the 4th (spare) port. Then plug the ethernet cable that goes to his computer into the female end of this device. Reverse the procedure at the other end (plug cable into female end and one male end into the computer and the other male end into the game) to complete the hookup. This device and others are similar but with different male to female configurations.Cables to Go 2-Port Splitter/Combiner - RJ-45 (M) - RJ-45 (F) - gray

Netgear WGR101 Cable/DSL Wireless Travel Router Review

Netgear WGR101 Cable/DSL Wireless Travel Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I applaud Netgear for being first to market with this device (the only other I know of is the Apple Airport Express), designed for geeky business travellers. There've been many times when I've been in a hotel with wired Internet access but wanted to use my laptop across the room in bed, or in a conference room with one wired network drop and a handful of people who wanted to use it. Travelling with a 30-foot cable and/or a multi-port switch is no fun. This device is light and tiny, has a modest-sized power adapter, and even comes with a short cable for connecting to a wired port and a zippered carrying case for all of that plus your pc-card NIC.
If you're not concerned with security and have your wireless NIC set to do DHCP basically all you do is plug it in and you're all set. Configuring the device is kind of a pain though: you can only connect to it wirelessly, so if you forget the SSID after setting it not to broadcast, or forget the WEP key, you have to use the reset button and start over (make sure you hold it down a good 10 seconds, just pressing it once quickly doesn't work).
It doesn't act quite like a typical router despite some product literature I've read: on a hotel network it doesn't provide firewall or NAT security--keep in mind if the hotel assigns you a public IP you're bare naked on the Internet.
Although the physical switch on the unit that puts it in config or single-/multi-user mode is a neat idea for security, it gave me a lot of problems having to reassociate or power cycle the device after changing settings. Given that in its default state it's a pass-through device like a bridge and has no IP address, there may not be a significantly better way though.
I had little to no luck using this device with my home router or cable modem, but on a hotel wired access point it was seamless including VPN connectivity (unlike my Netgear MR814 at home). Range is very good even through walls and floors/ceilings. I got mine for about half price after rebates which, I think, just barely makes it worth it. If you like to have the latest gadget, and especially if you travel, this is less of a pain and certainly niftier than carrying around a 30-foot cable and/or hub.

Netgear PA-101 Home Phoneline USB Adapter Review

Netgear PA-101 Home Phoneline USB Adapter
Average Reviews:

I wish I could give it no stars! What a mess. Looking to avoid drilling holes in my floors and running cable, I thought NetGear's Home Phoneline 10X (PA101) was the answer. I was wrong. I followed the sparse directions to the letter, but I couldn't establish communication. So I call tech support. In the recorded greeting, Netgear admitted that they're getting a high number of help calls. I'm not surprised. After wait times of a half hour or more (in their defense, NetGear has wonderful hold music) I finally get a tech that tells me that my house phone system is wired incorrectly so I would have to run a phone line from one PA101 to the other (using the home phone system so I wouldn't have to run cable is the whole reason why I bought their product in the first place! ) I was also told that I would have to reinstall the software, and I would need to hardcode the IP address in. None of this worked. Long story short, after a week of frustration, I have two weird looking but expensive paperweights, no LAN, and a great deal of buyer's remorse.

Adtran Express 3000 Standalone ISDN Ta with 2 Phone Ports Review

Adtran Express 3000 Standalone ISDN Ta with 2 Phone Ports
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used three different brands of ISDN T/A modems and the Express 3000 beats Eicon Diva by a small margin. Both of the modems provide consistent trouble-free service but Adtran edges out Eicon in installation and speed.
Adtran installation process requires that the user knows how to use a keyboard and mouse. Installing the Diva is a roller coaster ride because some little or major problem occurs nearly every time.
You also have to reload Eicon's software once every forty-five days for no apparent reason, except the modem will not work. I cannot remember ever reloading Adtran software.
Over the past six years, I have probably used 10 or more Diva modems but less than 10 Adtran Express 3000. Neither modem tolerates any type of power surge, spike or lightning and once the modem is hit, it cannot be repaired.
Eicon does provide better customer and technical support because Adtran really does not offer technical support. Adtran tech support consists of advice when the unit is being installed. Adtran is not helpful if the unit develops any type of problem.
