Belkin Wireless-G Router DSL/Cable Gateway Review

Belkin Wireless-G Router DSL/Cable Gateway

I think this router might be getting a bad rep on the wireless end, because it comes with a proprietary setting enabled by default that I think does more harm than good. If you have this router and are getting intermittent or no wireless connectivity, and you've verified all your settings are right, try this.
This router (Belkin model F5D7230-4, and other models) has a (proprietary?) feature called "Protected Mode". The default setting on this model (at least the one I got), unlike other models, has that mode set to "Auto" under the Wireless settings, which I take to mean "on". So turn it off. It's wonky, because even tho it's a proprietary feature, there is NO documentation in the router's online "Help" section. However, it IS described in the user's manual:
"As part of the 802.11g specification, Protected mode ensures proper operation of 802.11g clients and access points when there is heavy 802.11b traffic in the operating environment. When protected mode is ON, 802.11g scans for other wireless network traffic before it transmits data. Therefore, using this mode in environments with HEAVY 802.11b traffic or interference achieves best performance results. If you are in an environment with very little--or no--other wireless network traffic, your best performance will be achieved with Protected mode OFF."
Okay, so if it works best off, why does it ship in "Auto" mode? Turn it off. On other models, by default it does ships with the feature "off".Basically, I recommend setting this router up as simply as possible, but still having wireless encryption, of course.. So here are my further recommendations for setting this up. There's another (proprietary?) feature called "Turbo" mode. Again, no description of this on the interface itself, but it is described in the manual:
"Turbo mode is enabled by default. It allows the Router or Access Point to use frame bursting to deliver the maximum throughput, 2 times faster than any standard 802.11g equipment, to 802.11g clients. This measurement is based on aggregate throughput in a mixed 802.11b and 802.11g environment. Belkin 802.11g clients with the latest driver will support Turbo mode. Clients that do not support Turbo mode will operate normally with it enabled."
Again, I recommend turning it off. I also recommend deleting "Belkin Router" from the "domain" section under (I think) LAN settings, just keeping that field blank, and leaving wireless Channel as Auto (default choice, which normally goes to Channel 11 in the USA). And, as with any wireless rouer, you DEFINITELY want to put in a new wi-fi network name (SSID). Change the default SSID to something impersonal, but still unique. Further recommendations are keeping the thing well-ventilated, such as propping it up (securely) at an angle so air flows below it, above, and around the sides, and adjust the antenna of course then so it is vertical. Another thing I did was to turn Range Extension on, but I'm not sure that's necessary or if it just creates unnecessary heat, but since my friend was across the country, I was trying to pull out all the stops.
I chose this router for a friend (who purchased it on their own, and then I set it up). I chose it because it was the cheapest one in the store, and Belkin is a generally respected name when it comes to all their equipment (if often having the reputation of being a little expensive), and my past knowledge of their reputation with routers was good. Even though they don't make them themselves, but farm them out to others, their choices in the past have been good.
I initially set the router up at my home. I noticed that I had trouble connecting using Vista's wireless connection wizard, and I hate wizards and Vista's "wow" crap in general, so I got frustrated and found a "connect manually" choice, which was a whole lot easier for me, and after that, I was able to connect fine wirelessly for that time I was setting it up. However, my friend took it home and reported back that the laptop wasn't connecting, then it did, and then it stopped after a few minutes. Only then did I come to Amazon and read the reviews, where I saw so many others having similar issues. I suspected Protected and/or Turbo modes, so I did a little research, which confirmed my suspicions. I read a review of a similar Belkin router, the following excerpt summing it succinctly: "[Protected Mode] seems to make the network invisible to wireless devices you may be trying to set up for the first time".
With my friend having gone home (across the country), I was relieved to find this router has a remote admin mode (called Remote Management in the router). I learned this by downloading the User Manual. The manual doesn't have great screen shots, and my friend is not tech-savvy, but after only moderate pain, I had them successfully enable Remote Management, and tell me the WAN IP address (which, strangely enough, is nowhere to be found under WAN Settings--you have to go to the "Home" page of the interface, and it tells you there). I was then able to plug their WAN IP address into my browser, and wham--I'm signing in and configuring their router from across the country (we had set up an Admin Password together before leaving--very important).
So after disabling Protected and Turbo modes remotely, and doing my other recommendations above, my friend's laptop then connected immediately and automatically, with no action on their part (I had originally set up the laptop with the router when my friend was here). The connection now seems reliable and strong. My friend commented that it seemed fast. I think this is a good router for a beginner or someone who wants to purchase & config it for a less-advanced user. First, it looks cool in person, which means a surprising amount to newbies (frustratingly), but more importantly, the interface is very easy to understand, and well laid-out and not intimidating or illogical, unlike some of D-Link's later interfaces. Part of that is the logical layout itself. Some part of that is the absence of a lot of advanced features most people will never use, such as being able to tweak the Beacon and Broadcast Interval settings on wireless. However, the truly important advanced features seem to be there, such as MAC address filtering (both wired and wireless, where some routers won't let you filter wired MAC addies), Remote Admin, and the standard fare. The only thing I noticed that i'd like to see would be an option to completely disable the radio from the interface (because apparently the antenna is non-removable/non-upgradeable), but then again, you CAN set the radio to not broadcast its SSID (network name).
I liked this router enough that I only half-jokingly offered to my friend to trade my current router for this one--an offer which was promptly declined! :)
The router has 4 or 5 wired network ports in the back. It feels very lightweight. I didn't see any holes for airflow or heat management and it does not stand on its side, which is why I recommended leaning it against something on an angle (airflow is an issue on most home routers). The LED light array on the front seemed less obnoxious than D-Link's. For wi-fi encryption, I chose WPA-PSK. The password field is less confusing than some other brands, and it lets you choose either a hexadecimal or plain-text password, and it doesn't make you fill up all 64 or 128 characters, unlike some other brands I've seen IIRC, which can ironically make for a more complex password in some cases, because people can pick a long phrase they can actually remember. The passphrase we chose was long and plain-text, but did not use all the characters allowed, and it worked just fine with the Vista laptop.Further recommendation: if you're not a newbie, you'll know you don't have to run that silly "installation CD" that comes with the router. They REALLY encourage you to run the CD before you do ANYTHING, even before plugging in the router. It is obviously aimed at trying to cut down on the amount of tech support calls, which in spirit is a good idea. However, this gives new users the impression that routers need some kind of "driver" to work properly on a computer, which isn't true. Although the CD is probably nothing more than a glorified Computer-Based Training session, I wish they'd just provide a real manual instead (they do provide a paper Quick Start Guide). However, newbies will probably appreciate the interactive guidance and it does sound like a good idea for them. I don't know how many other companies are doing this now (nothing similar came with the 2 other routers I've bought, although the second one did have a "Wizard" built into the interface), but this could be a value-added feature for beginners who don't have a generous computer-savvy friend.
The default gateway address for this router is 192.168.2.1, not the traditional ~.0.1. This is good, because most DSL and cable modems are now selfishly commandeering ~.0.1. Another good thing is that I was able to do either all or almost all interface functions in Mozilla (Firefox of Seamonkey) browsers. I think there may have been one screen where I needed to switch to IE, though; I can't remember. I know that tonight when I did remote admin for my friend, I didn't have any problem. I made a bookmark for 192.168.2.1 in my friend's Mozilla browser before leaving, and named it "Router". This way, I could just tell them to drop down Bookmarks, and choose "Router" when the inevitable tech support call came.
I didn't bother updating the firmware, because I usually don't mess with firmware unless something's not working right--and I almost did so tonight in attemt to solve the wireless problem. Since updating firmware usually resets all previous settings (and often,...Read more›

It was cheap, it would have to retry 8 to 12 times before it would stay connected. So after 15 to 20 minutes, usually I could stay online. I kept it about 4 months, got something else that works better.

I must admit that to my shame I over reacted and jumped the gun when I said some unkind things about this product. Which of course reflects badly on the seller.
I failed to follow proper protocol and notify the seller first. Apparently my purchased had disappeared into the bowels of the USPS. Which was quickly and bitingly brought to my attention by the seller. Ouch! I quickly removed my review but I'm sure some of you saw it. My ethernet cable finally arrived a week late but no worst for wear. I hooked it up and it worked fine. Lesson learned and I hope picked up by all. Now for my letter to USPS.

Netgear RM356 Remote Access 56K Modem Router Review

Netgear RM356 Remote Access 56K Modem Router

If you use a modem to connect to the Internet or another network at home or in a small office, throw it away and get this device. Even if you have a single PC this device can provide a nailed-up network connection that is on all the time, just like you might see at work.. There is no more clicking on a connection icon and waiting for your PC to dial and handshake. It uses a built-in modem, your POTS (regular phone line), and ISP service. You can configure it to dial-on-demand or configure a nailed-up connection that is on all the time like DSL.
Pitfalls might include that you must have a network card in you PC to use this device. It doesn't work to my knowledge with dialup online service providers like AOL, MSN and those that require you to connect with their proprietary PC software. It's best to keep, or get a local Internet Service Provider that gives you a raw Internet connection. I used mine for years before DSL became available in my area. It's a great product.

A few years back, I got one of these modems for free as part of a deal when signing up for cable internet. It only lasted a few months before it started crapping out and losing its connection. Sometimes the connection was slower than dial-up even when the modem showed a good connection. I ended up buying a Linksys modem/router combined unit and it worked great.

Buffalo Technology AirStation High Power N150 Wireless Router & AP WHR-HP-GN (White) Review

Buffalo Technology AirStation High Power N150 Wireless Router and AP WHR-HP-GN (White)

If you're not a geek, this router is awesome. It comes with a CD which guides you through installation and secure setup. (The #1 problem with wireless routers is security, and the setup process is the solution.) It supports WPS, which means, you can hold down a button on the router for a few seconds, and then your devices (laptops, many Blu-Ray players) will automatically and securely negotiate connection to the router (no more entering crazy-long passwords).
If you're a geek, Buffalo actively supports DD-WRT (you can download it from their web site). In addition, the specs are great: 32 MB of RAM and 4 MB of flash space.

I was stuck with the adapter my desktop computer came with... This was fine until I moved into a new apartment building that only had WiFi and I was the furthest apartment away from the source. I had 1-0 bars and constantly lost connection.
I bought this nifty device when I had enough of bad internet. I was skeptical, I had never heard of this particular adapter, and it was selling for basically dirt. I bought it anyway. This adapter improved my signal up to 4-5 bars, and yes, I can see other networks I couldn't before (I even get 4-bar access to the Holiday Inn that is some distance away from me). It's fast and it's reliable.
The adapter came with a CD to install drivers. I didn't bother with it: I had my computer automatically download the drivers and it worked within SECONDS.
Oh: I'm running on Windows 7. It DOES work on Windows 7. The drivers just may not be on the disk. Have Windows search for those drivers instead (with an internet connection, of course).
Fantastic product.

Multi-Link Multi-link 4-port Fax Switch Review

Multi-Link Multi-link 4-port Fax Switch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Looking to economize by eliminating a dedicated fax line for our home office, we turned to this product to handle incoming calls and route the fax transmissions to the fax machine.
It DOES this, but "at a price." The "price" is an annoying ringback function that cannot be programmed out and that requires us to press "9" every time we answer the telephone. Customer service at this company is available only during "regular business hours" (i.e., approximately 9 to 5) and once contacted, not particularly helpful. One fellow at the service center delivered a short lecture on how this product worked, only to end with "you'll have to press '9' to disable the ringback". Great!
Another annoyance is that this product does not work with phone company voice mail - had to purchase a standalone voice mail unit to ensure we got our messages.
It does route the faxes to the fax machine as advertised, but the glitches make using it a less than "seamless" experience.

Garmin 18x PC GPS Navigator Unit Review

Garmin 18x PC GPS Navigator Unit

Bought this for our truck's APRS ham radio. Selected this model for ease of connection, wired a db9 plug to a 1/8" stereo plug and connected the GPS 18PC to the Kenwood TM-D710a radio.
Turned on GPS fx in radio and bingo! GPS icon started flashing in corner of radio's faceplate and we're sending packets with our location data.
We decided to try it on the dash instead of rooftop for two reasons. The cable was just a little short to extend out to the roof and provide me the inside routing I wanted. And, our Garmin Nuvi has always worked from the dash without any problems. Sure enough, the GPS 18 PC has worked perfectly for two weeks sending location info to our ham radio.
We dissected the cigarette lighter plug and removed the spring and button, replaced them with a pair of wires to an Andersen power-pole connector. This maintains the 5.7 volts to the gps 18, and allows us to plug into the switched accessory supply we added to the truck.
This Garmin gps looks nice, does everything it's supposed to. No surprises, no problems, works perfectly for the job.

This works beautifully and so much cheaper than my laptop manufactures (HP)docking station. I can do everything I wanted from a docking station "except" charge my laptop battery. I have hooked up a huge monitor, wireless keyboard, mouse & usb speakers (can hook up a printer also, I just have no need) and was HALF the price. It worked great straight out of the box but I did insert disk for drivers "just in case" and did run into a small problem when windows said installation failed but then Vista went right out to the internet and found the correct drivers and smooth sailing from then on. Now I can come and go from my desk with my laptop without having to plug & unplug everything each time ... just 1 vga/usb combo cord. Oh ... it IS vista 64 bit compatible and has it's own power supply. Glad I bought when I did, I see price has jumped almost 20.00 from what I paid just 10 days ago ... but it is definitely worth it!!!!!

This is the solution for laptop users who also like to use their laptop in the office, but don't like the hassle of connecting each device every time. With this station, connect all peripherals to the docking station, then use the included cable to connect the laptop to the dock. All your peripherals are now connected, with just one cable! This lets you come and go as you please without the hassle of repeatedly connecting and reconnecting devices to your laptop. This station contains a 3-port USB 2.0 hub, one serial DB9 port, one parallel printer port, one 10/100 RJ45 ethernet port, PS/2 mouse and keyboard ports, and a VGA pass-through port - all in just one unit! Connect your monitor, mouse, keyboard, printer, network, modem, and any USB 2.0 devices to the docking station for a convenient all-in-one connectivity solution. This docking station eliminates the clutter of cables connecting to your computer as it requires only a single VGA/USB combo cable. Additional USB hubs can be attached to allow you to daisy-chain up to 127 devices. Plug-and-play functionality eliminates the need to reboot during installation. This simple station makes desktop use of your laptop amazingly simple, convenient and, most importantly, inexpensive. This dock is designed as a 'universal" docking station. Due to the differing power requirements of different makes and models of laptop, providing power to the laptop is not a feature of our docking station. Our dock is designed to add an Ethernet port, a 9-pin Serial port, a 25-pin Parallel printer port, 2 PS/2 ports, a 3 port USB hub, and a VGA monitor pass through. Input: One DB9 RS-232 Serial Female, One DB25 Parallel Male (for IEEE-1284 bidirectional printers), Two PS/2 Female (for keyboard and mouse), One RJ45 Female, and One HD15 Male Output: Three USB Type A Female and One HD15 Female; The DB9 RS-232 serial connector supports baud rates from 1.2k to 115.2k; Complies with IEEE802.3u 100Base-TX and with IEEE802.3 10Base-T standards

D-Link EBR-2310/RE 4-Port 10/100 Switch Wired Ethernet Router (Refurbished)
Average Reviews:

I bought this router to be able to add wired connections to my Apple Airport Express. It worked using bridge mode but it is far from ideal. It occasionally will drop all connections if there is a lot of data going through it. I think this is probably a firmware issue since it never happened with my airport express alone. Also the data rate seems to have dropped - I used to get 30Mbps when my computer was connected via ethernet to my cable modem directly, and around 25Mbps when using my Airport Express alone, but now it has dropped to around 9-10Mbps. It's still enough for my needs but I really expected better from D-link. After an online search it appears that many people with this router are having the same issues, so I don't think it's just because this one is refurbished. I picked this up for $15 so I don't feel too bad about it but in retrospect I would probably have gone for a different router. Not recommended.

D-Link DWA-552 Xtreme N Wireless PCI Adapter Review

D-Link DWA-552 Xtreme N Wireless PCI Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hello all, thanks for taking the time to read this.
It took me a long time to really get a good handle on this cards performance and I have had it now for about 3 months. While the router that accompanies this adapter is the best wireless router I have ever used, I have found this PCI adapter to be just okay.
While it does it's job pretty well, it absolutely did not impress me as an "Extreme-N" PCI adapter. Let me say a little about my setup. I have the DLink Extreme N router upstairs and the PC that has this adapter in it sits on the floor and is almost directly across the house but downstairs (proably around 40-50 feet away and through about 4 walls at about -30 degrees). Windows thinks that it has a 300Mbps connection, but the included DLink software drivers can calculate the actual connection speed and it seems to fluctuate from anywhere from 2mbps and 108mbps (usually is around 32Mbps). The average throughput I usually get is around 60Mbps (which is around 7-8 megabytes a second...since you divide Mbps (Megabits) by 8bits to get Megabytes). If you dont know about the extreme-n router, I have a review on that too, but quickly its a gigabit router so it handle 1000Mbps (125 megabytes/sec) if you are using a wire, so there is no bottleneck within the router. I usually see around a 60% connection on the N network whereas my Centrino laptop in the same position gets around an 80% connection off of the "G" network that the router also transmits.
Although I am a little annoyed at the connection and throughput speeds, I am most annoyed at the fact that at the time of this review (5/2007) this PCI adapter is COMPLETELY and UTTERLY useless for Windows Vista. My Vista kept crashing (im talking a HARD crash...complete lockup of the computer, hard reset needed, after only 5-10 minutes past the boot-up process...consistently), and I tried to figure out why. I spoke to MS Customer service thinking that since Vista was so new, that there was a problem on their end. Together we figured out that it was this card that kept crashing the computer. After we disabled and removed the card from the system, it stopped crashing (I even tried to make it crash, but it was rock solid). The drivers I used were specifically labled Beta Vista Drivers, so until the drivers are out of the Beta phase, I wouldn't trust them. Since my house isnt yet wired for ethernet, and putting the wireless modem in that room would make my wireless network quite useless, I have a $250 piece of software (vista) just sitting on my shelf.
Anyways, if you are just using Windows XP, this should work out fine, not spectactular, not horrible...still better than the "G" networks (I will WAY outperform them if you are not as far from the router as I am) But not as spectacular as I hoped (Based on how spectacular the 655 router is).

Cisco SPA3102 Voice Gateway with Router Review

Cisco SPA3102 Voice Gateway with Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The SPA3102 gives you both an FXS port (for a phone) and an FXO port (for a phone line), it's two devices in one box. Each device can operate independently or can be made to interact with the other. It's great for a start-up VoIP system where you want to have one phone and access to one phone line from the PSTN. Be aware that this is NOT a device that is made for plug and play. You have to know what you are doing. It is an extremely flexible device with MANY options. Which means it can be overwhelming to a beginner. A lot of the options can be left at default but you still need a basic (at least) understanding of networking, SIP and VoIP to get this working with a provider or VoIP PBX. If you know what you are doing, this unit can be up and running in 10 minutes, otherwise you'd better have a lot of patience.
This unit is the successor to the SPA3000, first released by Sipura, which was bought by Linksys, then Cisco. they added a few more features upgraded firmware AND a router. Most people will already have a router on their system and will probably just disable this feature and use the second Ethernet jack in bridge mode allowing a second device to be plugged in, saving a port on your router or switch.
All in all a great unit, but not made for the inexperienced, do some research if you aren't quite sure if this is for you, there is a lot of info on line

I ordered two of these routers to set up as repeaters in my house. Both routers came very quickly and both routers were in really good condition when I received them. Neither router came with any documentation except for a piece of paper explaining the limited warranty, however, both routers still looked brand new. They do come with a set-up CD, however, the CD is not required if you are familiar with wireless LAN's.
I've flashed both routers with DD-WRT which was very simple to do, and they are both working flawlessly. I didn't even bother using them with the native firmware. DD-WRT all the way!
They do run HOT. I've stuck a pencil under the back end of the router on my desk to see if that helps the air circulate under it a bit better.
I highly recommend this router, especially flashed with DD-WRT firmware.

As others say, the device is small and easy on the eyes. I express caution with regard to critical purposes such as servers and IP telephony; we have experienced some weird problems with this. We have three (Netgear FS608 v2) in two locations; two connected to a 24 port Dell switch and the third I think connects to a Cisco 3524. They may intermittently refuse to forward frames from just one source to just one destination while allowing frames from that same source to other destination, weird stuff like that. Reset takes a power cycle OR just unplug the uplink cable and reconnect. It's a real nuisance if it means you have to drive to work on a weekend or an IP telephone call goes "blip" into la-la land. I'm sure they have a limitation on the size of the MAC address cache but I have not so far researched it. Beware using little switches on big networks! (That sounds like a grade b movie title!)

The NETGEAR FS608 8-Port Fast Ethernet Switch connects up to eight network devices at 10 or 100 Mbps over Ethernet cables.
Sturdy and Reliable Design NETGEAR's FS600 series switches are designed for use in a home and small office, housed in a compact white case that blends into your home decor. A fanless design keeps operation both silent and more reliable, and ports are located in the rear to reduce cable clutter. Each port has status LEDs for link and activity. The switch can be placed on a flat surface or vertically on the included stand.
Simple Setup and Stellar Performance Plug in your Ethernet cables and connect a power cord, and you're ready to go. There is no software to install or settings to configure. The switch features auto negotiation, which automatically obtains the fastest possible connection, and Auto Uplink adjusts for the different types of Ethernet cables. There is no need for toggle switches or special crossover cables. If your network has existing 10BASE-T devices, they will work seamlessly within a higher bandwidth environment with each port achieving its full speed.
All ports deliver 100 Mbps speed. The FS608 has a 64 KB queue buffer, an address database size of 1,024 MAC addresses, and up to a 148,800 frames/sec max non-blocking, wire-speed frame forward rate for a 100M port (14,800 frames/sec max for 10M port). The switch uses store-and-forward forwarding.
The NETGEAR FS608 is backed by a 3-year warranty.
