(More customer reviews)After making some recent upgrades in my primary audio/video system it became clear that the two way splitter that the cable company provided was simply inadequate to the task. Upon doing some research I determined that this particular splitter made by one of the industries most reputable manufacturers was going to have to be the way to go. Upon hooking up this superior two-way splitter in conjunction with Monster's MV3F2M NF Video 3 coaxial cables there was quite a wonderfully distinct difference in the picture on my new television.
After seeing such a distinct improvement in the signal for my primary audio/video system I immediately went out and purchased another one for the computer room to use for both the cable modem and the television in that room. This is the perfect two-way splitter for either a television/cable modem hookup or a television with PIP (picture-in-picture) capability in conjunction with a cable box or satellite receiver!
I highly recommend this outstanding cable splitter to any and all who're interested in getting the best picture available from their television sets or signal for their cable modems. The end results far outweigh the costs for this splitter! {ssintrepid}

I prefer it to other computer-based internet services that I have. It has most everything most people want in an internet connection: email, newsgroups and web browsing -- and no hastle with computer software and its constant upgrading (you receive periodic free upgrades automatically over the internet). You do have the added monthly expense of a subscription to the WebTV network that serves as your ISP. You need a standard telephone line connection, it can be an extension on your family line -- you probably won't need a new telephone line. Before you buy verify that WebTV offers a local telephone number for your dial-in use so your connection to WebTV won't be a toll call. Note that WebTV uses your telephone to connect to the internet, not through any TV cable service you may have.You will also need a TV with minimally audio and video input sockets. If you are planning to use it for serious email, you will also need a keyboard, either a wireless unit they sell or you can plug a standard computer keyboard into it. (More customer reviews)I had no problems at all with the computers that were connected via wires to this router. The wireless connection, on the other hand, was HORRIBLE!!!! The signal strength was great throughout the entire house, but the connection would just drop (every minute or so) for no reason.
I was hoping the firmware update that the other reviewers mentioned would fix the issue, and unfortunatelly it did NOT. The connection just keep dropping. Hopefully there is a fix out there. If there isn't, I will be returning this kit. I will let you know how this turns out!!!!!
EDIT-12/12/03. I found the issue. The channel I was using was the problem. I was using channel 5 instead of the default channel 6. Once I swichted it to channel 6 everything was fantastic (maybe something in my area was causing interference with channel 5 - there are no other visible wireless networks in my area). The signal strength was strong. I even tried blocking the signal as best as I could, but no matter what I did the signal remained strong and download speeds were unaffected. Its a great buy!!!

(More customer reviews)I researched competing products from DLink and NetGear online and read numerous reviews. Any of the HD-PLC products should perform similarly in the same situation. Before deciding on a powerline Ethernet product be sure to understand that the quality of your home wiring and the distance the signal must travel all can affect the performance of the product. Poor quality wiring or very long electrical runs may limit performance.
What I liked most about the Panasonic product is that the kit which includes two units is preconfigured, so it works right out of the box without any special configuration. I didn't have to install ANY software to get my network running. I plugged in one unit to my Internet router, and the other unit into a power outlet in a nearby office. Once I connected the Ethernet cable, I was up and running. It was really that easy.
One nice thing with this unit is that you can run a speed test from the unit itself, with the front LED's displaying the estimated network performance. This was handy as I tried different outlet combinations to acheive the best performance. As a side note, I found that plugging the "Master" unit into an outlet as close as possible to the breaker box yeilded the best results. By putting the master as close to the break box as possible (electrica wiring distance) I was able to get a much better signal. I have the master unit in a downtairs room that is about 40' from the breaker box, and the secondary unit in an upstairs office that is about 65' feet from the breaker box.
Note that any powerline Ethernet product is susceptible to interference from other devices. Pay attention to the manual regarding the types of devies that can cause interference, and avoid ever pluggint the device into a surge protector, since that will greatly limit performance.
An additional nice feature of the Panasonic unit compared with DLink and NetGear is that the unit has a power cable. This allows me to plug it into "hidden" outlets, and then place the box in an easy to reach location. Both the NetGear and DLink products are a box that plugs directly into the outlet. This makes them more difficult to access, especially if you want to look at the box to see what it is doing. I like that the Panasonic can sit nicely on the corner of my desk and I can see the lights. I also suspect that the Panasonic will operate cooler since it can be placed in locations where there is air flow all around the unit.
Performance will vary by house and situation. I have a gigabit network switch that connects my machine directly to a server. When I copy a 50 megabyte file to my server using Windows XP, it takes 8 to 9 seconds to copy a 50 megabyte file. Running the same 50 megabyte file copy to a machine on the HD-PLC network connection took about 27 seconds. This seems to be pretty good performance overall. Note that "speed test" is only as good as what is being tested. My test was a real world test under Windows XP copying a 50 megabyte ZIP file.

I decided to go ahead with the purchase because I had spent a lot of time researching router/switch combos with print server capability and true SPI firewall capability. There are not a lot of reasonably priced options out there. In summary this unit has performed like a dream. I had two PC's, a NIC laserprinter, and a parallel port printer (via print server) all plugged in, configured with my DSL service, and all up and running in less than 30 minutes. Please note that BEFORE I purchased this unit I made 3 separate "pre-sales" calls to Netgear tech support and received what I considered to be good information in each instance (I even placed a call at 3am one morning to check if they really were 24/7). Read the installation guide from cover to cover BEFORE you actually DO anything and you will probably find (as I did) that this is a no-brainer deal.

RCA DOCSIS External Cable Modem (DCM226) Review

(More customer reviews)Quite frankly, this is a horrible piece of hardware. I've had it for about 14 months now and it's given me nothing but headaches. For one thing, it consistently drops the cable signal about once every other week. How do I know this is not a problem with the cable company? My girlfriend has the same ISP, same LAN setup, the only difference is our cable modems (she has the a Zoom 5011 cable modem) and she NEVER drops her signal.
In addition to this, the incredibly poor design of the power dongle that attaches to the modem will cause you headaches to no end. Mine is so sensitive, that even slight movement of my desk will cause the modem to physically reset. This is absurd! I can't even touch the modem without having it reset because the power dongle is so sensitive to disturbances.
On top of all this, it tends to lose the connection when there is heavy traffic. For example, I've had many LAN parties at my house where we've played online games with 4-6 machines. After about 1-2 hours, the connection will simply die and the modem will require a reboot.
It's causing me more headaches now as I am running an in house server that I'm using as the development server for one of my classes. It is consistently dying due to the aforementioned power dongle issue, thus causing problems for the rest of the group memebers who need to access the server to develop on it.
Bottom line, you're better off getting the Zoom 5011 or Toshiba PCX2200. My RCA modem is getting replaced ASAP! I don't know how I put up with it for so long.

(More customer reviews)Hello folks,.. wow this product has gotten Very Postive and very negative reviews, well, I was very sceptical after reading the negative ones, but I have some tips for you, Yes I got my Speakerphone and it works Great. Here is something I found out though,. Just Like a Webcam it needs a HIGH SPEED USB Port, I pluged this into my Standard Port < front of computer with Standard Hub > and it really sounded Funky,.. when I pluged it back into the REAR high speed Hub, it worked just great,.. I believe ports on the back of the computer Feed Directly from the Motherboard and are High Speed, Unlike Ports on the front,..ALso I didn't use the software that came with this, I downloaded the latest version from the skype Site. it has a call test that will show you how it's working,.. So if you use or are going to use Skype, I recommend this product,.. the only thing Im not sure of yet is how to keep my external speakers on, seems I have to Unplug this unit to do that, or my sound wants to go through the speakerphone..but as for calls it works great.

Verizon DSL Gateway Review

(More customer reviews)Recently I bought this Verizon DSL Gateway, which is really an Actiontech GT704WG that's made specifically for Verizon DSL users. My service was working intermittantly with my six year old Westell so at first I bought a Netgear Wireless N router/modem, but neither I, nor Netgear, nor Verizon could get it to work. I returned the Netgear and bought this one, plugged it in, connected the cables, turned it on and in 30-45 seconds I was up and running. No calls to support, no fiddling around with it, it just worked. Also it stopped the intermittant disconnects that I was getting with the Westell. (I have some static in my phone line but this does not seem to affect this gateway as it did my Westell.)
I'm running two (wired) PCs and one (wireless) laptop on it. I did have to type in a new WEP address when I fired up my laptop, but the process was very easy. When the laptop booted up, it said that it found a new network and needs the WEP address, then it opened a window for me to type in the address. There was a card that came with the modem that said this would happen and told me the address was on the bottom of the modem. I typed in the numbers and was online with my laptop in seconds. This is useful cause no one can use your wireless service unless they know the WEP address, so it's a good thing.
It does look a little cheap and who knows how long it will last, but for three days now I've been enjoying fast - trouble free internet service. The box says it will ONLY work with Verizon DSL service though.

(More customer reviews)Not to nitpick on Larry's "review", but that was more of a personal venting directed towards Comcast for *their* lack of supporting this device. The device itself is not at fault, and should not warrant 1 star. (note: Try and keep reviews a little more focused on the subject matter at hand, and don't let influence beyond the manufactures control affect your opinion). I personally give this unit a 4 out of 5 stars, as it has an extremely high throughput, rarely bogs down as my old modem did, and has VoIP capability's...all at a great price point.
I nixed a star for the lack an included battery to support phone conversations in a power outage. I alleviated this issue by plugging the modem, and my phone both into an old UPS I had laying around. In a power outage all normal wireless home phones would die. Even if the modem worked, there's nothing to power the phone itself. My current setup keeps the modem and phone powered and online for 12+ hours after a power outage.

It's a great modem, as reliable as my older 1100, and the quality skips right over the 2500! If you've been using one of those, than you know THAT is very important...
Basically, it's a killer modem, better than all the other modems I've tried & I think it's a great relief. I was tired of the freeze-ups!
Another bonus, it works just as well on my MAC G4 as it does on my other PC's.

Now that I will not be paying a monthly modem rental, this modem will pay for itself in just a few months.
