(More customer reviews)Quite frankly, this is a horrible piece of hardware. I've had it for about 14 months now and it's given me nothing but headaches. For one thing, it consistently drops the cable signal about once every other week. How do I know this is not a problem with the cable company? My girlfriend has the same ISP, same LAN setup, the only difference is our cable modems (she has the a Zoom 5011 cable modem) and she NEVER drops her signal.
In addition to this, the incredibly poor design of the power dongle that attaches to the modem will cause you headaches to no end. Mine is so sensitive, that even slight movement of my desk will cause the modem to physically reset. This is absurd! I can't even touch the modem without having it reset because the power dongle is so sensitive to disturbances.
On top of all this, it tends to lose the connection when there is heavy traffic. For example, I've had many LAN parties at my house where we've played online games with 4-6 machines. After about 1-2 hours, the connection will simply die and the modem will require a reboot.
It's causing me more headaches now as I am running an in house server that I'm using as the development server for one of my classes. It is consistently dying due to the aforementioned power dongle issue, thus causing problems for the rest of the group memebers who need to access the server to develop on it.
Bottom line, you're better off getting the Zoom 5011 or Toshiba PCX2200. My RCA modem is getting replaced ASAP! I don't know how I put up with it for so long.

It's built like a tank and probably fair to say that it's better than using a new dsl modem. Also, there is no router inside, which is good. There is no complicated settings, you merely hook this up to a router.
There is no USB port. Simply hook this up to the wan port of a router.
I have used this modem 24/7 for more years then I can count.

(More customer reviews)Not to nitpick on Larry's "review", but that was more of a personal venting directed towards Comcast for *their* lack of supporting this device. The device itself is not at fault, and should not warrant 1 star. (note: Try and keep reviews a little more focused on the subject matter at hand, and don't let influence beyond the manufactures control affect your opinion). I personally give this unit a 4 out of 5 stars, as it has an extremely high throughput, rarely bogs down as my old modem did, and has VoIP capability's...all at a great price point.
I nixed a star for the lack an included battery to support phone conversations in a power outage. I alleviated this issue by plugging the modem, and my phone both into an old UPS I had laying around. In a power outage all normal wireless home phones would die. Even if the modem worked, there's nothing to power the phone itself. My current setup keeps the modem and phone powered and online for 12+ hours after a power outage.

It's a great modem, as reliable as my older 1100, and the quality skips right over the 2500! If you've been using one of those, than you know THAT is very important...
Basically, it's a killer modem, better than all the other modems I've tried & I think it's a great relief. I was tired of the freeze-ups!
Another bonus, it works just as well on my MAC G4 as it does on my other PC's.

It only lasted a few months before it started crapping out and losing its connection. Sometimes the connection was slower than dial-up even when the modem showed a good connection. I ended up buying a Linksys modem/router combined unit and it worked great.

World Modem V92 Data/fax USB Desktop Business Modem Review

The only down side is that McAfee 8.0 does not like this modem and will block the usb port. Go figure so don't use McAfee with this.

Zoom CableModem 5241 - Cable modem - external - USB / Ethernet - 42 Mbps Review

(More customer reviews)I used previosly the modem model 5041 over 5 years already. There were issues with connection at first time, but it was solved when I called to my provider (Comcast by the way). Since then I never had any problems with this equipment. I would keep it till it die of the old age but on Dec 14 2009 Comcast upgraded its network so I had to pick new modem from their approved list of modems for 3 days before of marked day. I checked reviews and picked the ZOOM 5241. I have wireless router (linksys 54G) connected to my 5241.
What did I do for setup.
1. Unplugged old modem from power, coaxial and router,
2. Plugged new modem 5241 to his power adapter, coaxial cable and router (with RJ45 connector),
3. Lunched Internet browser (Firefox or IE),
4. I got Comcast page with instructions automatically (It wouldn't let go for another until setup is done),
5. Followed technician instructions (which not require any special skills),
6. Entered my current account number and Comcast shown me all my data including physical and mac addresses. I did not plug in directly from modem to PC. At first Comcast did not pass linksys. I just ignored it and "run diagnostic" (which is just a button) again. Everything was set up automatically. After too reboots I got perfect connections wire and wireless.
Downloading speed jumped up dramatically.
PS. One week later.
Zoom 5241 works now with renewed Comcast network very good. However once I lost connection but because of the my LinkSys 54G wireless router. After I hit reset button on it I got all my connections back. So it was a linksys issue. Right now Zoom + Linksys work flawlessly. And I noticed that downloading speed went up about 10 times faster (Limewire from 15-24 Kbs to 200-500 Kbs - 250 average).
Well 5041 is useless for Comcast IP for today anyway but 5241 works perfect. I picked mine in Fry's Electronics with described above characteristics for $54.

Cisco DOCSIS 3.0 DPC3000 Cable Modem DPC-3000 Review

(More customer reviews)I've been using the the DPC3000 with Comcast for over 6 months with no problems at all.
FYI, we are Internet users only, we don't have Comcast cable or phone service and we've been leasing the modem because I heard that their were going to be network upgrades and sure enough Comcast rolled out their DOCSIS 3.0 service. The DPC3000 cane as a free swap from Comcast. I called and got it 3 days later (I returned the old one to local Comcast office).
The only problem I encountered was due to my ancient Linksys BEFSR41 wired router. The comm chipset in the Linksys was so old that it wasn't designed for the kind of throughput that was coming down the wire from Comcast and the DPC3000, and it wouldn't sync up any faster than approx 5mbs (though it did work)! Once I replaced it *, I've been bumping along along at approx 18-20mbs. Quite a jump from the 6-8mb I had been getting before and NO cost increase, though it's still not cheap. Since it was installed the DPC3000 has been trouble free. Zero problems.
* FYI: I bought a Netgear N600 WNDR3700 router , which has been performing extremely well.

Motorola SURFboard SB5101N DOCSIS 2.0 Cable Modem Review

(More customer reviews)Working well with Charter cable, Doubled my speed to 18 Mbps. I was only getting 9 Mbps on my old clunker with a 12Mbps subscription, you need to re register the new MAC with your ISP and power off ALL Network connected devices and PC's for it to start working. I paid under Thirty USD for a refurbished unit and it looks like new, I don't think I would have gotten anymore speed out of a Docsis 3 modem at over 3 times the price. No problems on my network which feeds the internet to 3 Windows PC's + Ooma and a Wii

Webstar DPC2100 Cable Modem Review

(More customer reviews)I ordered this modem hoping to replace the leased modem from Comcast to save a few bucks now that they have increased the lease fee to $5 a month. Got it from State Street deals and it was shipped promptly (shipment fullfiled by Amazon). I made sure that this model (DPC2100) is on Comcast's supported modem list before I ordered.
However, after working with Comcast tech support for a long time, we failed to make to the modem to respond to head end request for initialization.
So this box goes back to Amazon. I was hoping to get a replacement when I requested MRA, but they don't provide an option for exchange.
I would like to hear other customers' experience on using this modem with Comcast.

Performance is great and very convenient having build in wireless, no need for a separate router, especially if you are mostly wireless, which my family is. I also ran several speed tests and got up to 20Mbps download and 3.4Mbps upload. Very pleased and a dramatic improvement from my older Comcast supplied Scientific Atlanta Modem. Highly recommended!!

(More customer reviews)My Motorola Surfboard would come and go. It was not dependable. So I trotted down to OfficeMax and bought this Linksys modem. It was a snap it install. No software needed unless you use it with USB, which I don't.
I called Cox and gave them the numbers off the box and was online fast. No more being knocked off when I least expect it. In fact, I haven't been knocked off at all.
This is a great modem. I use it with a Linksys N router and Cox Communications.
Not much you can say about a modem. It either keeps you online or not. This one does.
Highly recommended.

Motorola SURFboard Gateway SBG6580 DOCSIS 3.0 Wireless Cable Modem Review

(More customer reviews)When evaluating this type of equipment, one must differentiate between the device itself and other factors that can impact its performance. Blaming the manufacturer for issues likely caused by one's ISP is akin to saying, "I can't get past third gear because of all this construction on the highway... I'll never buy a Jaguar again!"
That said, the SBG6580 is a solid piece of kit.
This latest addition to the SURFboard line combines a DOCSIS 3 cable modem with a gigabit switch and a dual-antenna 802.11n wireless access point, providing all the networking equipment a home office needs in a single compact package... this amounts to a single point of failure, but that's par for the residential course. It can deliver 42 mbps downstream on a single channel (which my provider brands "Lightning") with support for eight bonded channels... meaning that when the day comes that ISPs start selling triple-digit speeds, this gateway won't need to be replaced.
Wi-Fi performance has been comparable to my old draft n router with similar range and throughput in a mixed mode environment. What sets the SBG6580 apart are its better indicator lights and superior configuration utility which offers some settings normally found only on enterprise-grade equipment. Those less inclined to tinker should know that push-button support is provided; once the cable guy finished with the wall outlet, setup took less than five minutes.
Finally, one word of caution: the SBG6580 needs airflow. I originally placed it flush against a similarly-sized backup hard drive on my desk and found the unit hot to the touch after a few hours. To avoid problems, do not block the vents.
