Belkin Wireless Play Max Router (F7D4301) Review

Belkin Wireless Play Max Router (F7D4301)

My experience with this router has been one major mistake after another. I didn't check the Amazon reviews before purchasing - my mistake. I bought it (not through Amazon) - my mistake. I threw away the packaging after setting it up and now I can't return - major mistake.
Although this thing was simple enough to set-up, it has been a major letdown for all of the reasons that other reviewers have mentioned. I've had it for 2 weeks now, and I count it a good day if I only have to reset the damn thing once. My devices all run more slowly than on my old router, and the stupid thing freezes up constantly. I've also run into multiple IP address conflict messages and have to reset it to prevent those messages as well.
I'm so frustrated that I'll likely trash the pile of junk and go buy another brand. Shame on me for buying this thing - and shame on me for not keeping the packaging until I knew how it worked (or didn't in this case).

After hours upon hours of trying to get this cable and software to work, It eventually allowed me about an hour of connected time, and then never worked again. My opinion is to stick with the OEM cable. The extra money's worth paying to avoid the headache.

Cradlepoint PHS-300 Personal Wi-Fi Hotspot Router + Accessory Kit Review

Cradlepoint PHS-300 Personal Wi-Fi Hotspot Router + Accessory Kit
Average Reviews:

When I researched wireless routers I had a choice between this product and the native product from Verizon. I chose this product for a number of reasons: I could keep my old wireless modem, I could buy a second battery which I did, and it allowed up to 16 connections instead of the five. So far I haven't been disappointed with the product, the setup was very easy on my macbook and the range is very good. I use an Airport express associated with my home routers for streaming iTunes and printer data, I set this router up the same way. I didn't try printing yet but I think it will work without a problem, however so far I am not able to stream iTunes through it. It plays for a couple of seconds and then stops, I think the buffers are being overrun. There are some parameters but I haven't made the time to see if they can be adjusted enough to get the streaming to work - it just may be too much for such a small router. We have two macbrook pros, two airport express routers and an iPod Touch and all work great. I haven't spent much time on the road with the router yet but I don't expect it to perform any better than the native router does on Verizon's network. I am going to be very interested to see if and how fast the router resets when the connection drops.
By the way the router easily fits into a pocket but with the modem attached it becomes awkward so you need some place to carry it.

Cisco-Linksys WRV54G Wireless-G VPN Router Review

Cisco-Linksys WRV54G Wireless-G VPN Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this item from Amazon even though the reviews I read were less than stellar. I just assumed most of the problems were user configuration errors. After all.... it is easy to mess up a VPN configuration, especially if you are using Windows IPSEC policies because the UI for setting that up can be a little misleading.
However after setting it up in my home lab I discovered that... it just didn't work as a VPN device. I connect with a VPN client called SSH Sentinel (it is a little dated but works on every other VPN I have used). I could get a connection fine but it refused to route traffic inside the LAN at all. Even setting up the route recommended by Linksys it still would not work.
So I decided not to give up yet and searched out Google groups for people who have solved this issue and I found... no one. Everyone complained at the constant problems with each firmware release and the inability to VPN into the router properly. I was surprised because quite frankly all the other linksys hardware I have work great. I rarely have any problems with their print server, kvm switches and other routers... why in the world would Linksys drop the ball on this product.
Well it seems this particular router is different than any of Linksys's other routers because it is running an embedded version of Linux. It would seem that Linksys and this Linux vendor are having some big difficulties getting this thing to work and perhaps it got pushed out the door too soon.
Well I went out and bought a cheaper BEFVP41 VPN router from Linksys (it is not wireless but I had a spare WAP-G) and I was able to get a VPN connection the first time.
So.. if you buy this router to VPN into your home network you will have some serious problems. I also had some flaky wireless problems with it but I must admit... after reading all the problems with this model I put the thing back in the box and bought something else that works...
I hope this isn't the end of Linksys putting out good products and being responsive to their clients...

Belkin F5D6230-3 Wireless Cable/DSL Router Review

Belkin F5D6230-3 Wireless Cable/DSL Router
Average Reviews:

$129.99 is a "hot buy"????
I bought this on clearance from the Belkin website 2 months ago for $30.
I wouldn't even recommend it at that price.
The firewall will not close off everything it leaves "port 0" open no matter what. And the only way to stealth port 80 is by redirecting it to a fake ip address.
It also slows down such that browsing the web becomes an excruciatingly slow experience. The only way to fix it is to unplug the power and plug it back in whenever it goes slow. I have read reports that turning off the router's DHCP server might prevent that from happening... but DHCP is not something you should have to do without.
This is an out of date product. Badly put together. Definitely not worth what Amazon is asking for it.
Try to find a good deal on a Linksys or something... do not walk, RUN away from Belkin products.

Belkin 200 Mbps Powerline 3-Port Adapter (Black) Review

Belkin 200 Mbps Powerline 3-Port Adapter (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This worked better for me than my wireless but wasn't as good has hardwired. I did several test of transferring a 101MB file from one PC to another on my LAN. I had one PC upstairs on my 2nd level and one PC on my ground level. The two outlets I used for the Belkin 200 Mbps Powerline 3-Port Adapter were on a different circuit breaker (I never did do speed test on the same breaker to compare those speeds). When using the Belkin 200 Mbps Powerline 3-Port Adapter it averaged transferring this file across my LAN in around 30 seconds, so around 3.4 MB/s or (27.2 Mbps). The highest transfer speed I saw in my test was 5.0 MB/s (or 40 Mbps). As you can see nowhere near the claimed 200 Mbps. I also tested copying this same file over my wireless network using a linksys wrt54gs router and linksys wpc54gs wireless PCMCIA card. The wireless connection averaged transferring the 101MB file in about 1 minutes 15 seconds, so around 1.3 MB/s (or 10.4 Mbps). The highest transfer speed I saw in my test over wireless was 2.3 MB/s or 18.4 Mbps. When I transferred this 101MB file over a hardwired LAN cable it averaged at about 17 seconds, so around 6.0 MB/s (or 48 Mbps). I forgot to check the highest transfer rate I saw in this test. I also tested copying over a large file of 1.54GB on my LAN with the Belkin 200 Mbps Powerline 3-Port Adapter and did see a better average time with transferring this larger file. I averaged copying this file in 5 minutes and 54 seconds, so about 4.4 MB/s (or 35.2 Mbps). I bought this device to connect to my PS3, and it has worked well for me so far. I also have PS3 Media Server installed on one of my PC's upstairs and it is able to stream video to my PS3 downstairs rather well, something the wireless connection I was using previous to buying the Belkin Adapter struggled with sometimes. I can now stream HD content from my media center PC from upstairs to my PS3. Another big plus is that I didn't have to drill any holes in the walls to run a LAN cable downstairs.

If you need multiple ultra-high-speed network connections in the farthest reaches of your home, the Belkin Powerline AV+ Starter Kit is just what you've been looking for. This kit includes everything you need to create three network connections that provide data speeds of up to 200 Mbps using your home's existing electrical wiring.
Create a Small Office in Your Attic With the Belkin Powerline AV+ Starter Kit, you can send high-bandwidth content from the Internet to computers and network devices all over your home through the electrical wiring in your house. This kit lets you convert any electrical outlet in your home into three network connections.

This kit is the perfect solution for setting up an office with multiple network devices. For instance, if you'd like to set up a work space in the attic or another room where a wireless signal is weak, the Powerline AV+ makes networking simple. You don't need to drill holes to extend Ethernet cable, and you won't have to worry about the slow data speeds and intermittent dropouts that weak wireless connections are plagued with. Additionally, unlike wireless connections, the Powerline network connection isn't affected by factors such as cordless telephones and other wireless interference.

There is no performance penalty that comes with the convenience of the Powerline AV; data speeds along at up to 200 Mbps, meaning it can handle even heavy Internet usage, such as downloading and streaming music and video files, playing online games, and making VoIP phone calls, all without any lag time or hiccups.

Enhanced Security Keeps Out Snoopers There is no need to worry about security either; with 128-bit DES link encryption, the Powerline AV ensures that your information is safe and secure from intruders. Since the information is all transferred with wires, hackers can't simply sniff your information out of the air, as they easily can with insecure wireless connections.

Simple Plug-and-Play Setup Setup is as simple as plugging one adapter into a wall outlet and connecting it into your router, and then plugging the other adapter into an outlet where you need multiple network connections. This kit includes two adapters: one adapter has a single port to connect to your cable modem, and the second adapter has three ports so you can create multiple network connections. If you have need for another connection, just purchase an additional adapter.

The Belkin Powerline AV+ is HomePlug AV certified, can coexist with HomePlug 1.0, and is compliant with 802.3/802.3u standards. It is backed by a lifetime warranty.

What's in the Box Two Powerline Networking Adapters (one single-port, one three-port), two Ethernet cables, two power cords, two wall plug adapters, quick installation guide, and CD-ROM with installation software and user manual.

ZyXEL X-550 Xtrememimo 802.11G MIMO Wireless Broadband Router Review

ZyXEL X-550 Xtrememimo 802.11G MIMO Wireless Broadband Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After my Linksys WRT54G failed, I was not looking forward to another wireless router installation 'experience'. It took the better part of one day to install the Linksys with the aid of multiple downloaded documents from their web site to finally get the right combination to work. The Linksys was still in warranty when it failed, but no amount of money or service would convince me to continue using this unit. I was tired of having to reconfigure it about once a month when it would just decide to quit working.
So, thanks to high ratings for the Zyxel X-550 router on Amazon.com, I thought I would go this route. I am not a real technical writer so I am not going to get into the comptuer buzz words that the geeks will use (I do not understand what they say anyway). I do not care how it works, as long as it works and is easy to install.
Well, I followed the basic installation instructions and it was working within minutes. I use a Bellsouth provided DSL modem and there was absolutely not one single hang up to get on-line in just a few minutes. Setting up the security encryption was just about as easy.
I have used the Zyxel X-550 for several months now without a hiccup. I have two, and sometimes three, different brands of wireless access points connected most of the time without any problems. I did add a Zyxel directional antenna to one unit which was in a bad location.
The Zyxel X-550 is easy to configure and is now basically one of those items I just ignore and forget about because it just does its job day in and day out and needs no attention.

Belkin Wireless G Desktop Card F5D7000 - Network adapter - PCI - 802.11b, 802.11g Review

Belkin Wireless G Desktop Card F5D7000 - Network adapter - PCI - 802.11b, 802.11g
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got the wireless card for my PC and installed it with minor difficulty. It worked just "OK" for 8 months or so. Within that time period I had to troubleshoot with Belkin technical support about 4 times. They were nice, maybe a bit condescending. The fact is that I do not have a second job maintaining my computer and I expect the support to be supportive without making me feel like a dummy. But, those are minor annoyances at best.
Anyway, after the 8 months or so my computer unexpectedly froze and I could not get on my network, yet the wireless networks of my neighbors COULD be found. Huh? I called Belkin and (to their credit) they did not pretend to not know what the problem was. With little hesitation they said the card was defective. I was transferred three times and told they would replace it at no cost. While at this point I did not want any more Belkin products, since they were replacing it at no cost to me...what did I have to lose?
OK, they asked for a credit card number so that if I didn't return my defective card in 20 days they would charge my card $43 and change. That seemed fair. We did this arrangement on a Wednesday afternoon. However, less than two hours later I was looking at my records and saw they already charged me for the card! I called back and said I did not understand...Blekin told me one thing and did another...major pet peeve of mine! I asked them to stop the order and just credit my card. No one asked me WHY, but I didn't care anymore. Just credit me. I was placed on hold while they "undid" the order placed two hours earlier. Grrrrrr.
The customer service person said that he undid the order, but they would have to call me back this afternoon to confirm my cancellation...ISN'T THAT WHAT WE WERE DOING NOW???? Guess who didn't get a call?
I received an e-mail the next day about how to return my defective card after I receive the new one. I e-mailed back that I had cancelled and did and just wanted my credit. No one responded. I e-mailed again on Saturday. No word again.
On Monday I got an e-mail saying that the card already shipped and that there was nothing they could do! I tried to reach this particular customer service person and ...gasp...she was not at her desk! I sent her an e-mail telling her the entire situation and that I would not buy Belkin EVER again.
Never heard back on that. By the way, I was frustrated but not venting in my e-mail. I had legitimate gripes!
I received the card but left it in the box...went and added my defective card and copies of my previous e-mails and mailed it to Belkin...they rec'd it two weeks ago and have yet to credit me. I called cust service a few days ago and gave them my return authorization number, my case number, and the tracking number to prove the cards were rec'd by Belkin. The cust service person even complimented me on my having all the info. AUGH! He said he would send my request to be credited to the return dept and since I had all the info I should see a credit in a couple of days.
No such luck. This isn't about $43. This is about a company that promises one thing and then hangs up the phone and does another. I still have the router, but will be donating that soon. I *did* ask for a company credit in lieu of the card, and that would have been fine, but then it is not transferrable and I am not planning on going anywhere near Belkin products again. I had hoped to donate the credit with the router and maybe someone in need would have better luck.
Forget about it. STAY AWAY. I so wish I had spent a few bucks more for a better company and product. If I could give Belkin zero stars, I would.

Cisco-Linksys WSB24 Wireless-B Signal Booster Review

Cisco-Linksys WSB24 Wireless-B Signal Booster
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The reality of WiFi is that just about everyone I know is not getting as solid a signal as they'd like. I've been frustrated by dead spots in the house, and I'm sure we've all done strange "rain dances" with our notebooks, cables, antennas, etc. to try to improve the signal.
However, my WiFi network did not seem as zippy as my Ethernet when using our cable modem, even though the bandwidth of both networks dwarfs the cable modem. Well, instantly after installing the booster, I got noticeably better response in a room where the signal used to be so weak that Linksys' own utility would show no signal strength (even though I could surf from there).
The WSB24 is trivial to install (180 seconds and that was because I didn't know you had to push the cable onto the connector pretty firmly). If you were a LinkSys pioneer and bought the early access points, you owe it to yourself to upgrade with this booster.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Cisco-Linksys WSB24 Wireless-B Signal Booster

The Linksys wireless signal booster piggybacks onto your Linksys wireless access point (or wireless access point router) to increase the effective range and coverage area of your 802.11b network. The added signal strength also helps speed up your close-range communications, because every packet comes through "loud and clear," reducing retransmissions that are due to reception errors.
To install, just stack the Linksys wireless signal booster on your access point, move the antennas to the booster, and attach the booster's twin cables to the access point--no drivers or modifications to your setup are necessary.
The Linksys wireless signal booster saves wiring costs and helps build corporate wireless infrastructure by driving signals even into those distant, reflective corners and hard-to-reach areas. And it's perfect for covering large areas in warehouse environments, public spaces, wireless hot spots, and outdoor venues--anywhere you need extra coverage for your wireless LAN. NOTE: The wireless signal booster is certified by the FCC for use only with the Linksys wireless access point, model number WAP11 and the Linksys wireless access point router, model number BEFW11S4.

We've been using this particular US Robotics modem for years. It's always been a good product. We mostly use them in remote monitoring sites, and we tend to lose them to lightning damage. Surge protection helps, but we are talking about lightning. Anyway, this modem is well worth trying. This was my first experience with Amazon.com, and it was flawless. It couldn't have been easier. Hawking Broadband Booster (HBB1) Review

Hawking Broadband Booster (HBB1)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros: Works as advertised - makes better use of limited upstream bandwidth.
Cons: A bit black-boxy. Not a whole lot of info out there on how it works - some reviewers test it all wrong.
Despite the lack of solid information, I took the plunge and got one - and I'm glad I did. In my opinion, this is the most innovative home networking product I've seen since the first broadband router came out.
Installation was a breeze - all you do is hook it up. It is the size of a deck of cards with 3 connections (network in, network out and a tiny transformer). Plug it in and it tests your upstream line speed. About 30 seconds later, the 4 lights come on and the thing is up and running.
One thing Hawking did which is really nice, is the last LED goes from green (indicating standard traffic) to bright, super intense blue when the booster does something to optimize the network traffic. Let me tell you, once it is plugged in, you'd be surprised how much that light stays blue.
What this thing does is to prioritize outgoing traffic. Outgoing, you say. Who cares, right? That's what I said until I hooked this thing up. The small, outgoing broadband upstream pipe (usually 128k - 384k) is pretty overloaded with all the Internet-aware applications we're all running these days, and the pipe gets used pretty inefficiently.
The official press states that the booster prioritizes the traffic, so more "time sensitive" requests such as voice-over-IP, gaming and certain UDP packets are sent out first. Bumped to the bottom are the HTTP web page requests, FTP traffic and so forth. This is seems to do as advertised.
What was not advertised (and was quite surprising) is what happened when only ONE machine is on the network. We turned on my wife's computer and she connected to work via a Citrix connection - which is always extremely slow even when noone else is on the network. I shut down all the other machines on the network to ensure it was as slow as normal, then I installed the booster. When she reconnected, the booster's little blue light came on and hardly went out. The remote session became as responsive as working with a non-remote machine! Three days later, she is still happy. Now I'm just guessing, but it seems as if the booster is not only prioritizing, but is actually combining the barrage of small, outgoing packets of data into larger ones.
I didn't go crazy and bog down the network with a ton of artificial activity - plenty of other folks have tried that. I did fire up two more machines with browsers and my XBox Live. They had no effect on the Citrix session and my XBox Live session (voice and gaming) seemed a bit more zippy than normal.
A friend at work did some similar tests on his network and was equally blown away by the results.
Bottom line... I'd whole-heartily recommend this to anyone who:
1. Has more than one machine running on their home network. I'm guessing it would help a lot if you had kids doing any sort of file sharing.
2. Has a single machine performing a lot of Internet-related activity that you want prioritized (e.g. FTP's to the back of the line).
3. Anyone who runs remote connections a lot - I will definitely be recommending this to folks at work that complain about slow Citrix and Remote Desktop connections.

Great 3G router. Smallest high performance wireless router I have ever seen. It can be powered up by mini USB. It has three modes for router, access point, wireless access point. Wireless access point feature is really cool. Basically you can connect this hotspot to any wireless router via WiFi then either extend the wifi or plug a network device to it's ethernet port to turn it into wireless device. Price is unbelievable for all these functions.

Very easily to configure.
Very reliable.
Low latency and high bandwidth. This is reliable enough for my gaming: Warcraft 3, World of Warcraft.

The router/switch/NAT features of this little box work just like the other Linksys products in this line -- and just as well. What's new is the IPSec VPN support. You can set up secure tunnels over the Internet between two or more LANs using one of these boxes in front of each LAN. Alternatively (or in addition) you can set up a tunnel between a standalone remote PC and a LAN that has one of these routers *IF* the remote PC supports IPSec. Windows 2000 and XP support IPSec but Windows 9x/Me/NT do *NOT*. (If you want a Windows 9x/Me/NT PC to connect into an IPSec VPN, you will need a 3rd party IPSec driver, or just buy another one of these boxes to put in front of the PC.)
Configuring IPSec on a Windows 2000 or XP PC is not exactly easy either -- Linksys' how-to document is SIXTEEN PAGES long! But the difficulty is not Linksys' fault -- rather it's due to Microsoft's tortured GUI for the IPSec configuration.
But setting up a tunnel between two of these boxes is easy. It's only the standalone PC to LAN tunnel that is daunting.
I want to give this product 5 stars. It works very well, and the price is almost too good to be true -- it compares quite favorably with other products costing 5-10 times more. But I have to take a point off because Linksys does not give enough emphasis to the Windows 2000/XP limitation of the standalone PC VPN client in its marketing copy, and there is not one word about how to configure the standalone client in the manual that comes with the router -- you have to hunt for it on Linksys' Web site. From what I see on the discussion boards, there are a lot of people who are lost without better information on these points. So if you plan to use a standalone VPN client, be prepared for a struggle, but hang in there -- it DOES work!
