Replaced a cooked AT&T supplied Motorola 2210-02-1002 (which is strongly NOT recommended because of overheating and poor ventilation design - very common to die just after waranty period). There are so many choices out there and prices vary so wildly that it was hard to choose a replacement. I had a good router already setup and didn't want to waste time with extra configuration of a dsl/router which is all the rage these days. So I searched for just a replacement dsl modem. Saw a few peer reviews on this Diamond DSL602e giving good grades to an easy setup and compatibility with AT&T so I bit the bullet and took a chance. So far it has worked beautifully. I connected all the cables, hooked up an ethernet to a laptop and typed in the web setup address (in this case 192.168.1.1 - every modem is different). I then entered the name, password and other info, then hooked up the ethernet to the router and everything connected automatically.
pros:
- 5 minute setup from plug in to live on internet. Used web based setup.
- cheap
- doesn't run very hot (as compared to the Motorola unit)
- has a on/off switch which is much less painless that unplugging modem for the occasional modem reset.
cons:
- not very stylish and small for those who care (I don't.) But this also gives better ventilation.
Hint for those setting up a replacement modem - get onto the configuration pages of your old modem and copy/print all your settings before pulling it. It makes life a whole lot easier than calling your ISP for all the info.
