(More customer reviews)Since purchasing this printer on December 1, we have had nothing but trouble. It has affected the functioning of many programs and keeps kicking us off the internet. The kicker was when microsoft shut down the computer to save us from having a memory dump, and in the error report said the problem is the drivers with this printer and that HP is aware of it. We contacted HP who gave us a fix and it is somewhat better, but still kicks us off the internet. Always loved our previous HP printers but this one is better to avoid. We're returning it, sadly.

(More customer reviews)Pretty much every major annoyance you've encountered in a fax machine is present in this thing. First, I receive faxes on a daily basis and the 25 or so blank pages I can insert are not enough. If I try and put more than 25 pages in it will jam or feed two or more pages at one time. Second, you can see the wire attachment catches the faxes we send. What about the faxes we receive? It spits them out on the bottom to land all over the desk or floor. Hey HP - this isn't rocket science here. Don't you think buyers would've liked some kind of tray to catch the incoming faxes? Third, (and most annoying) it simply doesn't work properly. Even though it's supposed to detect the difference, about one in four incoming faxes are picked up by the internal answering machine instead of the fax. Fourth, the answering machine will come on if someone calls and you don't pick up in four rings. Other machines can detect if you pick up another line and usually stop the message. This one can't.
Is there anything good about it? Well, if the fax connection is successful it does print ok faxes at about one page per 30 seconds to one minute. It's quiet for a fax since it's basically an inkjet printer. Scans of basic black text copy ok, but it's evident the page was scanned, photocopies still look better. Definitely don't use it to copy pages that need to have a professional look.
I've returned this once already, the replacement is just as bad. This model has just too many problems for me to be able to recommend it to anyone.

(More customer reviews)If you do a moderate amount of faxing, and need a stand alone fax, this is a great machine. You can scan faxes into the memory while it is sending, so if you have several faxes to send, you can scan them all in at once. Saves a lot of time. The inkjet faxes are much easier to read than thermal rolls.
The reason I didn't give it a five-star was that it wouldn't receive right out of the box. Took a good 15 minutes on the phone with Brother's customer service (here in the US, BTW...) but it got done. Some internal setting was off. But, it now works great. Just know that's a very minor problem if it occurs. Nuisance.

(More customer reviews)I bought this printer after looking at a number of others. I thought it was a nice printer with great price for all of the features it had.
After taking the printer out of the box, it only took about 10 minutes to set up. There was a big sheet in the box with illustrations and step by step instructions. Also, the software CD guides you through the set up. Once again, a very quick and easy set up. I was up and printing in 10 minutes!
The printer works great. It prints text very fast and color text with photos fairly quickly too. The scanner, copier, and fax work great. I have not had any problems. I've been running about 50 sheets of paper in the tray and have not had one paper jam.
I also like the fact that there is a telephone handset on the unit so you can use it as a land line if necessary.
All and all I found it to be a nice, reliable, all in one printer with a very affordable price. I would recommend this printer to others.

(More customer reviews)The Sharp UX-B20 fax machine is easy to set up, does all that I want in a fax machine, prints on plain paper, and uses an ink jet cartridge rather than the hard-to-install roll of ink film. Also, the design of the machine is the "cleanest" and most compact I've seen. The ink cartridge is expensive, about twice as expensive as a roll of ink film. However, it will last about 500 sheets whereas a roll of ink film will only last about 250 sheets. So, the cost of the cartridge is very comparable. Rolls of film are usually about half the cost of the cartridge. Half the cost, but only half the number of sheets!! I like this machine!!

(More customer reviews)I bought this all-in-one from costco's website. It was a great copier and fax, which was my main concern. I had it about six months before I started having ink problems. I kept getting ink errors, like "no Cartridge" even when I had all 4 in there. I called Brother to fix the problem and they told me the black ink cartridge was defective. So I asked them to replace it, and they told me since it had been over 6 mo. it was my problem. I bought another cartridge (not cheap) to replace the defective full black cartridge. I replaced the cartridge and then it told me the blue cartridge was defective, full but defective. So i wasted two full ink cartridges on an error that did not go away. I also found out that the colored ink cartridges cycle, and use ink even if you use the machine for b&w only. Thank goodness for costco's return policy, because I was not stuck with the defective machine. Now I am looking for another one to replace it.

(More customer reviews)I was concerned that this model might be as bad as the 1240 model, but after about a week of use, the 1040 model is working good. No paper feeding problems when sending faxes.
The fax machine is sharing the same line as my regular phone with no problems, but you must physically locate your answering machine next to the fax so that you can plug it into your fax machine for this to work. Messages go to the answering machine, and faxes go to the fax machine just as they should.

(More customer reviews)I really like that it has a built in fax modem. That means it can function as a standalone fax machine/copier. you don't have to connect it to a PC to use it as a Fax machine.
Text quality is good. Photo quality is OK. Good enough for casual photo printing, but pros and advanced amateurs will want a dedicated photo printer.
Very easy to set up. Instructions are well written and easy to follow.
It comes with PaperPort SE with OCR and the device control program (Brother control Center 3)is very well designed and allows you to do all the things the device can do pretty easily.
I think the paper supply cartridge is poorly designed. It is too easy to accidentally change the size of paper that you are using and this can cause paper jams. I think this problem can be minimized with practice, but if you have a spouse who is a technophobe, it could be a point of frustration.
I just got it, so I can't confirm this, but the manual claims the black ink cartridge can produce up to 900 pages of text, assuming an average of 5% coverage. If this is anywhere close to true, this means it is one of the most economical ink jet printers on the market.
I paid $99 for this device, and for the money it is a remarkable value.
Update 8/18/2007 - I have resolved the paper cartridge issue. Apparently, I hadn't set up the cartridge properly, and that was the cause of the paperjams. However, while I can upgrade the unit for overall design, I must downgrade it for its owner's manual's poor description of the paper cartridge set-up. It's still a good product overall though. I still have no regrets buying it.

The copy machine part of fax makes nice clean copies, too. This wouldn't be very cost effective if you are going to receive a lot of faxes or make a lot of copies. It is great for someone like me who has to fax stuff for work occasionally and doesn't want to drive to the library and pay $2.00 a page.

Brother MFC-9120CN High Quality Digital Color All-in-One Printer with Fax and Networking Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this Brother printer to replace an HP 2840 color laser. I like the Brother. It's smaller and quieter. It doesn't have to calibrate a couple times a day either. Scans are way faster than the HP and the scan quality if far better than the HP. Copies and printing are great, as expected. I don't ever fax so I can't address it's capabilities there.
I found one limitation with this printer that prevented me from giving it five stars. The printer can only be used as a network printer attached to the router via an Ethernet cable or it can be a workstation printer supporting one PC attached via a USB cable. If your using Windows networking to share the printer (i.e. it's connected to one PC via USB and enabled for print sharing), it's not supported. What? You got it. Brother won't let you share the printer other than to have it setup as a network printer attached to the router.
This is an issue if, like me, the router is nowhere near the printer and you want to do a lot of scanning using the PC based utilities vs. the little screen on the printer. You can scan with it as a network printer but you can only do it using the function keys on the printer itself. You lose the benefits of the PC software based approach. If you do any volume of scanning, you want the PC utilities enabled.
I was able to work around the problem and get it working like I wanted but it took a couple days working on and off to sort out. I called Brother technical support. They kindly told me the printer doesn't support what I wanted to do and I should return the product. What? Unbelievable!!
To get it to work as a shared USB attached printer, you have to go through the CD install process on each PC. That's okay once you understand that's the process.
The only remaining limitation is quickly setting up a temporary shared user. Say your brother-in-law is in town for the weekend and needs to print. He can't use the Windows "Add a printer" function and get to your Brother printer. You have to go find the CD and do a full install for your brother-in-law to print his Mapquest directions home. It's not a huge problem but Brother should not have designed it this way.
