I do most of my shopping online so I was curious to see how this process would work.. I already owned my own phone and was just done with the high monthly bill... I ordered my SIM card and starter kit from amazon and a couple of days later I received it in the mail.... Called the number... Someone actually answered and about 10 minutes later I was in their system and I was even able to keep my number... Thanks Fuzion and Amazon... : )

However, the SGH-A197 phone doesn't appear to have the functionality to connect to a PC (natively in Windows or using the Samsung PC Studio software.) Thus this cable isn't worth anything. If anyone does know of a way to connect the phone, please let me know!

Psion 56k Travel Modem Review

(More customer reviews)I was very disappointed with this product. I purchased it for my Handspring Visor because it was the fastest modem on the market. I could never get it to work. First of all, it was not made for the Visor, it was made for the Revo, so none of the instructions in the box helped me set it up. I followed the instructions on Psion's web site, but after many more attempts, I was still unsucessful in connecting to my ISP. I even called Psion's technical support hotline, but got nowhere. After trying to get this product to work for about a month, I sent it back and purchased a Thincom 33.6 modem (about the same price) and was able to connect immediately. I am not saying that this is a bad product, it most likely works fine with Psion's PDAs, but, it is not a product that should be purchased for use with a Handspring Visor.

Ready Broadband Nationwide Mobile Broadband Internet Connection (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)I've had an Asus netbook for nearly two years and finally decided to equip it with a mobile broadband card. Since my need for such a device would be very casual (I have a 15Mbps cable modem connection with wifi router at home and 3G data on my phone) I was looking for a service that wouldn't require some lengthy contract or a large investment up front. Virgin Mobile seemed to offer more economical plans ($20 for 300 MB) but the initial cost of their modem was significantly higher. ReadyMobile seemed to fit both requirements, especially with respect to start-up costs.
First, I'll talk briefly about the modem. It is a Sierra Compass 598 which runs on Sprint's network. Setting up the device might require a little patience for some users. While the instruction sheet says you can plug the USB modem right in and install drivers from imbedded flash memory, I was unable to do so. That will require installing those files from an included CD-ROM. For those of you, like myself, who have a netbook with no optical drive present, you'll need to copy the entire installation package, about 95 MB total, on to an SD card or USB flash drive. The driver software set-up process took longer than I expected, but eventually I was able to get everything running. To finalize the set-up and establish service, you have to call ReadyMobile and speak to a service rep. I was on hold for about 10 minutes, then spent another five minutes getting the account activated.
The service itself seems to work just fine. I was able to play full-sized CNN news videos with very little buffering, though I could tell things didn't run as smoothly when compared to my 15Mbps cable connection. That's to be expected given the difference between an EVDO connection and a cable connection over wifi. As far as basic web browsing and email is concerned, the ReadyMobile handles both tasks quite effectively. Video sites such as YouTube are certainly watchable, but can chew quite a bit off your MB balance. I do not recommend this service if you're planning on streaming tons of audio or video on a regular basis.
I decided on the $25 plan for 250MB of data. That is about the only plan ReadyMobile offers that is cost-effective for light users. The $40/600MB plan is not a good value, and the $75/1GB plan is an absolute rip-off. If you will be using large amounts data over an extended period of time, Virgin Mobile broadband offers a much better value. However, if you're somebody who needs a more temporary mobile broadband set-up for occasional usage, ReadyMobile is quite economical thanks to their lower-cost modem. It certainly is more suited to my needs than those expensive long-term contract plans offered by AT&T and Verizon.

CRICKET: UM185C,MODEM-CD-LESS SOFTWARE Review

(More customer reviews)I've had this modem for several months now and I'm going to stay with Cricket as I can't get DSL or cable. I am barely under coverage where I'm at but I still get good speeds, you'll want to check coverage at mycricket.com before you buy one. They have got three different monthly plans, $40 for 2.5 GB, $50 for 5 GB and $60 for 7.5 GB. Their fair use policy slows down the speed if you use more than your allowed amount but I've been able to get maybe twice the GB's, only at a slower speed, but watch it! If you use too much over your plan they'll keep slowing you down till you have practically no speed and then when the next month comes round it might take up to ten days for the speed to pick up again. Customer support does not help, if you have any problems you have to do your own research.

4595 3G Mobile Broadband Modem Review

(More customer reviews)Great idea. Wasn't sure it would work well. Needed to be able to use a modem in a variety of countries, with a variety of local cards, to avoid the incredibly high data costs that US carriers tend to charge when you're using cellular data services outside the U.S.
The Zoom unit is solid. Nice simple design.
It's a little tricky putting the SIM card into the slot - after you take off the back cover, you have to carefully position it so it will slide under a thin metal band. But you eventually get the hang of it.
Unfortunately the AT&T voice/data card that I use in my smartphone didn't work in the Zoom modem. I couldn't connect with the network. I called Zoom tech support several times. The Zoom tech support people were helpful, but this unit is really new - they admitted that they haven't gotten a lot of calls on it yet. I finally talked to "Dennis," who said that you have to get a "data only" SIM card from AT&T. Unfortunately the reps at AT&T say there is no such thing - that you can only get a data SIM if you also buy a PCMCIA modem. Called tech support back at Zoom and they said you can get one if you go to an AT&T store. I was getting tired of the AT&T runaround, so I checked T-Mobile online.
It turns out T-Mobile has an unlimited data plan for $39.99/month. Went to the local store with my laptop and my Zoom modem, signed up for the plan, and got the SIM card. Didn't have to get a contract, or buy a modem or phone. Plugged the card into the Zoom modem, and plugged the Zoom modem into the laptop. Bingo. It downloaded pages faster than my cable modem - tough to believe, but true.
The Zoom software is nicely designed. It shows you your usage rate, in case you're watching your megabytes. Makes it easy to receive SMS messages - which comes in handy when you're registering on the T-Mobile site, for example. We'll see how this works with local SIM cards in other areas of the world, but so far - thanks to T-Mobile - this is pretty encouraging.
Update, June 2011 - Still chugging along. The T-Mobile plan is now $49 a month, which may or may not be related to ATT buying T-Mobile (sad). In any case, this thing works beautifully with all SIM cards so far, and gives me almost-cable-speed wireless in a variety of settings. The software is elegant and intuitive. One note - when you remove it from your computer with the power on, first disconnect it from the network, then go to the Z icon in the system tray, right-click, and hit "EXIT." THEN you can "remove the hardware" using the remove hardware icon in windows. If you don't do it this way, you can get the blue screen of death due to IRQ interrupt conflicts.
