Going on 9 months with the phone. Still enjoying it and happy with my decision. There is word of the Lotus 2 (2nd generation) phone coming out sometime in 2010. It's too early to tell how much will have changed from the Lotus 1, but so far word has it that the micro SDHC memory limit has been expanded to 32Gb and the outer screen will be touch sensitive. The touch screen functionality suggests that the inner screen will have this too, but that was not mentioned. In any case, expect the phone to debut sometime in the summer. If you really need a phone right now, you can't go wrong with the Lotus given the extremely attractive discounts going on.

The LG Lotus was introduced in the fall of 2008, to reasonable fanfare and press. But do you hear anything about the Lotus now? Not much, which I find strange because the LG Lotus is such an amazing phone. Maybe the surging popularity of touch screen phones overshadows it?
I bucked the touch screen trend and instead went with an LG Lotus. I had to switch from Verizon to Sprint in order to get it, because US based cellular carriers still impose a carrier lock on most phones and have significant pricing discounts when buying a phone with a plan. At first, I was worried about leaving "American's most reliable network" and sacrificing the "in network" minutes with a few of the people I know... but then I came to realize that Sprint has an excellent network as well. So far in my first few weeks of being on the Sprint network, I've noticed no performance loss.
But back to the phone. This is what attracted me to the Lotus:
1) EXCELLENT QWERTY KEYPAD. I don't like the lack of feedback from a touch screen phone; but you've no choice with it, because that's the main interface you're given (unless you do everything by voice command). On the other hand, the tactile sensation of the Lotus keypad is excellent. I have XL sized hands and have no trouble rapidly "double thumb" typing on the Lotus. I tried the Blackberry Curve and Treo--the Lotus keypad works with fewer typos.
2) SMALL FORM FACTOR. The iPhone, Storm, and Omnia touch screen style phones are all quite large and a bit weighty. They don't fit comfortably in your pocket, especially if you've got it in a case to avoid screen scratches. But the Lotus disappears in your pocket. Even in a shirt pocket, it is unobtrusive. When folded, the inner screen and keyboard are fully protected. Yet, when you open it up, the size is doubled and it is easy to hold. THIS is what cellular communications should be all about. I've tried out the Motorola RAZR and I'd say the Lotus is about the same thickness but easier to hold. Overall, the design of the Lotus is very unusual. When opened, it almost looks like a miniature laptop! :-)
3) SEMI-SMART PHONE. What does it take for a cellular phone to be called a Smart Phone? "There is no agreement in the industry about what a smartphone actually is and definitions have changed over time." The Lotus supports Java applications, can browse the web, download files, exchange e-mail (when connected, e-mail is pushed to the phone), and work as a GPS device. This certainly sounds smart to me. Aside from the default browser, you can download others (like the Opera Mini) and even use a GMail application instead of going through the HTML interface. I'm sure as time goes on, the list of compatible Java apps for the Lotus will increase.
4) PLAN VERSATILITY. With smart phones like the iPhone, Storm, and Omnia, you MUST have a data plan. With the Lotus, you can choose whether or not you want a data plan. Plus, on Sprint, you can do this change mid-stream on your contract without incurring costs or contract change penalties (the countdown to expiration remains unchanged). I find this an attractive advantage over the competition.
5) SCREEN RESOLUTION. The inner screen of the Lotus is 2.5" diagonal. It is a beautiful wide screen that looks like one you'd see on a quality digital camera. The resolution is SUPERB. Pictures appear razor sharp and in full accurate color. Even the external screen looks great, and you can choose not only a few different clock layouts but a different wallpaper from the internal screen.
6) MENU SYSTEM. The default "Carousel" style menu system is actually very nice. It is customizable and provides very easy access to popular functions of the phone. It is great for novices but a little annoying for the technically adept. However, you can dispense with it and go with the LG menu system. With the help of a Sprint store rep, you can get the default LG menu activated (or if you know your MSL number, you can do it yourself). I prefer the LG menu as it removes the Carousel clutter (if the menu would auto-hide, I'd like it more) so you can see your wallpaper image in all its glory. Plus, you go from 5 to 12 favorites (shortcuts), something I really appreciate. Not only that, but the left menu button becomes a quick access link to the Calendar/Scheduler, instead of it being hidden behind a carousel tile you have to hunt for. Supposedly, going with the LG menu saves you some battery life, too.
7) NO THEFT MAGNET. Large and glamorous PDA phones are a theft magnet, especially the coveted iPhone. Personally, I find the idea of constantly whipping out an expensive device increases the chance for damage (who here hasn't dropped a phone at least once on a hard surface?) and involuntary loss due to theft. The Lotus is nicely inconspicuous (especially the black version).
8) MUSIC PLAYBACK QUALITY. The built in music player is a little cumbersome at first, in that upon initial insertion of the SD card, it scans all of your music and creates an internal index. But once that index is created, it is quick and easy to play music selections by "All Songs", "Artists", "Genres", and "Albums". Plus you can create your own playlists, as well as use random or sequential play by Genre, Artist, and All Songs. A very nice attribute for the way the SD card is used is that you can subdivide your music by whatever folders you want--the Lotus scans the card and finds them, rather than requiring all songs to be in one folder. Sound quality is impressive, although for this small size the bass is lacking. But mids and highs are clear and accurate. I couldn't believe what I was able to hear... better than the iPod earbuds, that's for certain. Plus, it has a 2.5mm jack so you can plug in earbuds if you wish to listen privately. Bluetooth headsets are also supported.
9) EXCELLENT GPS SOFTWARE. I was about to buy a Garmin Nuvi 255w. But now, I don't have to. The Sprint GPS Navigator is excellent! It really works. Plus, it's full featured. You get horizon view and bird's eye view, turn-by-turn voice navigation with street names, easily stored favorites, and interfacing with Google maps. It also audibly informs you about traffic conditions. What more could you want?
10) DECENT CAMERA. A 2.0 megapixel camera sounds passe, when 3.2 and 5.0 cellphone cameras are available. Well, I don't know what firmware LG put in this phone, but this is the best 2.0 megapixel camera I've ever seen. I'd swear it was 3.0 megapixel. Photos are of very high quality. It works OK in low light if the subject remains still. There is NO flash, unfortunately. I wouldn't use this over a full fledged digital camera, but it makes for an excellent backup.
11) OBVIOUS CHARGING INDICATOR. On many phones, you need to look at the LCD screen to see a message that charging is complete or that the battery indicator is now on full. With the Lotus, the external music controls are lit up red when charging is taking place, but change to white once charging is finished--quite obvious to notice from a distance, which is very convenient.
12) MINI USB CONNECTOR. The mini USB connector works very well with this phone, sliding into place securely. And now there are vendors supplying car chargers with retractable cords that work with the Lotus. It's an excellent solution for convenient charging on the go with no cords to hassle with.
OTHERS - the phone has 5 alarm settings, one "quick alarm" and 4 main ones that you can set for whatever period you need (once, daily, weekly, monthly) and with whatever sound you want (default or downloaded). There is even a feature that allows you to record a phone call--not bad.So, those are the things I really like about the Lotus. But alas, no phone is perfect. Here is what I see needing improvement:
1) VOICE QUALITY. During calls, voices are projected through an internal speaker on the lid. Depending on the party reached, some calls sound a little flat and tinny on high volume. This is in contrast to the excellent voice quality I had on a Motorola E815. Now, it's not so bad that it is a deal breaker, but I wish it was a little better. If you're in a noisy room and crank up the volume, you'll be a bit disappointed. I tend to keep the volume set to about the mid-point. Using an ear set works well, as an alternative. In fact, at home I plug in a wired ear set and it works beautifully. I tuck the phone in my pocket and walk around hands free. The speakerphone quality is excellent, though.
2) BATTERY LIFE. If you leave your phone connected to the Internet most of the time, you'll probably need to recharge your phone daily. But if you shut off the Internet connection when not in use, battery life should be about average for standby and talk time. The Lotus is rated at 5.5 hours, but I'd say it's just about 3 hours. Refurbished Motorola L7c Bluetooth Camera Phone Verizon Review

(More customer reviews)The Motoroloa L7c is the Verizon version of the Motorola SLVR L7 cell phone, which was a upgraded version of the L6. I have owned both the L7c and the L7. Both are the very popular "candy bar" shape, thin and light with a large color screen and lit-up motorola silvered keypad. The L7c is slightly thicker, but otherwise the same size as the L7c. I like both of the phones very much. However, the L7c is a Verizon CDMA phone, and is running the Verizon version software, providing the same menu choices as the other Verizon phones, aggressively advertising their premium "V-Cast" suite of music, video, ringtones and internet downloads, which have an extra cost. All of the Verizon phones have the same software suite, "Get it Now" for video, music and ringtones management, Messaging, Contacts, Recent calls, and Settings and Tools. All of these suites are severely limited, compared to the L7. You are limited to the ringtones you have to purchase from Verizon. I do not like being locked into only the ringtones and games and items that Verizon controls.
Music syncing to your computer on the L7c only works with a PC and using their extra software purchased on a CD ROM.... Will not synch on a Mac. There is an additional Micro SD memory card that you can purchase, the L7c will accept up to a 2 gb card or smaller (not sure if a larger one will work), but it fits inside the case under a battery in a very fragile cage. For a Mac user, you have to pop the back, remove the battery, remove the micro SD card and plug it directly into a SD card reader and then the card will mount and you can copy MP3s and MP4s to the audio file, videos (cell phone gp formatted), and jpeg photos to your photo file. Reinstall the micro SD card and put everything togehter and then you have access to music and video and photos. Bluetooth transfer is flawed to computers and phone books and events will not synch to your phone calendar on the L7c (using the Mac isynch anyway).
The above is in contradistinction to the SLVR L7, which has a much better and detailed calendar, phone contact list (with photos, addresses, emails, and other important information (like a real contact manager). Synchs phone book and calendars to the Mac flawlessly, and the extra memory micro SD card plugs into the side from externally (will handle up to a 1gb card, the 2gb card is not recognized.) Plut the phone into your computer and the micro SD card mounts for you to copy photos, music and movies to.
The music player on the L7c is flawed... you can only create playlists with a lot of manual work, and only plays mono from the speaker or a wired mono microphone-headset. On the other hand, the SLVR L7 plays stereo from a special plugged headset or your headset with an adapter. The LSVR L7 comes with iTunes in some versions. The built-in motorola MP3 player software does not recognized MP4s, unlike iTunes, but there are a lot of people who have developed software tools to load hacked versions of iTunes in which works fairly well.
The SLVR L7 stereo volume is low and I have had to buy an amplifier for it from Radio Shack.
The Motorola SLVR L7 is a quad-band GSM phone, whick makes it usable in Europe, South America, and other countries, it is easy to drop in a SIM chip into the inside under the battery , to get foreign cell service. I have used it in Mexico and Europe with Mexican and European SIM chips and it is great. The Verizon L7c is locked to the CDMA networks and Mexican coverage is patchy, and troublesome, and there is no European service.
Battery life is an issue with both of these cell phones, talking and using the screens and playing mp3s will deplete the usual batteries within 12-36 hours. There are three batteries that can be used, the BC50 with is about 600 milliamp hours, the BC60 whichh is about 800 mah, and the BC 70, which is about 1000 mahs. There are extended battery backs sold but they are not necessary for any of the above batteries. I have found that a Motorola battery BK 10 (1500 mah- 4-5 days!) will fit in the battery compartment of both of these phones, but the extended battery back is not quite big enough and some surgery is necessary to get the extended battery cover to go back on the phone with the BK10 exposed. But in a case, no one will see.
The video recorder and photo camera of the L7 is superior to the L7c, which seems more blurry and not as many pixesl. Both are not much to write home about, though. Both have programmable buttons that can activate the camera or video in a shortcut. Both have zoom capability and the L7c has some editing capabilities in the photo utilities and special effects.
Both do video mail and photo mail, in addition to text mail. I have not tested the internet functioning of any of these phones.
In summary, the Motorola L7c is the Verizon attempt to have a Motorola SLVR L7 type phone, custom made for the Verison networks. It is similar but lacks a lot a flexibility and capability of the original L7. I love the design of both, but feel for Mac users, the L7 is a better and more friendly phone and does everything better. However I am currently locked to the Verizon phone system, and I think the L7c is a good conpromise.

The SLVR L7c is fully compatible with Verizon's VZ Navigator service, a feature that provides all the bells and whistles of an advanced navigation system on your mobile phone at a fraction of the price of other GPS devices and systems. The VZ Navigator service provides heads-up, voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions (with auto-rerouting if you miss a turn), local search of nearly fourteen million points of interest (POIs) in the United States, and detailed color maps that can be quickly panned and zoomed. With VZ Navigator, you'll know where you are, know what's around you, and know how to get there fast (additional Verizon charges apply).
Because the SLVR L7c is Bluetooth enabled, wireless headsets can be configured with the phone for total hands-free operation.
Messaging, Internet, and Tools The SLVR L7c is a messaging and wireless Internet powerhouse. Support is built in for sending and receiving pictures, text, graphics, sound, and video via messages. When used in combination with the phone's built-in still and video camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging fun. Instant messaging is supported via AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, and ICQ, and the phone also ships with a built-in email client with support for POP3 and SMTP protocols (Verizon messaging charges apply). The cable worked right out of the box. The trick here is you need to change your USB connection settings on your phone if you want to transfer mp3 or picture files. On the LG Shine, we changed it to "Mass Storage" and then our PC treated the phone just like an external drive.

I also used it to tether as a modem for my laptop, no issues there, great for visiting clients at Starbucks and not having to pay for internet. Really nice not having to fumble around with setup on that tethering. I used to watch youtube via player application, before youtube finally made their own plugin. I would check out Fifth Gear, top gear, etc episodes during my lunch hour, it was good fun, espcially with the tilt screen while I was eating. After two years the battery needed replacing, I never did, but it sure needed a new one. The charge was only lasting a couple hours. I dropped it twice, and had the screen replaced once for $100. The time the screen needed replacing it was thrown from the second story of my apartment, the phone is pretty durable. Most phones would have smashed to pieces.
What can it do that an iPhone can't you ask?
* Tether as a modem
* Internet Access with AT&T via 3G for $20/month NOT $30 like on the iphone
* Full keyboard
* SMS messaging, (add pictures to text msgs)
* Run office applications (word, powerpoint, etc)

* Looks better (impress your friends, the tilt looked like a brick)
* Better support if/wehn it breaks, at least implied
* More applications
* Larger storage up to 32gb with 3GS
* Ipod / music work much better, easier to use etc
* Voicemail stores on the device
* GPS device with compass can tell you which way to turn not just your location
* Thinner, lighter
All in all I am planning on keeping the iPhone after having the tilt for 2 years. I still love the tilt though... nothing wrong with that phone at all.

The phone has many excellent features, such as:
o Multi band covering the whole world
o Full communication suite (BT, wireless, push email, Internet...) that is easy to setup
o Nice touch screen and nice panels, which can be developed by a normal user
o Office tools and applications
o and many more
Its features are better than many cell phones such as the HTC diamond, which is comparable to it, and is always said that this is an imitation of it. Moreover, it runs great and flawlessly.
The couple of things that I would like to be better are the speaker phone function, it just needs to be a little bit louder, and the multimedia player that comes with it, but again you can always buy third party applications that can cover all types of audio and video.
I'm extremely happy with the phone and recommend it to anybody and everybody.

I bought this because it leads you to believe that there is software available that will enable you to communicate with your phone. There is no software that I could locate so spending $14 for this usb cable is a waste of your money. I have sent an email to the seller inquiring as to the location of said software but without response. Note the sellers statement:
"Cable also allows access to features such as Phonebook, Internet, Music, Ringtones, MP3, Calendar, etc as long as your phone and software support that feature"
NEW:
Seller emailed me advising that this was "advertised as a charger" and offered two ideas for possible software. THERE IS NO SOFTWARE THAT WILL MAKE THIS WORK! Should you wish to access the phone the only way is via bluetooth and a free download. Total cost is $5 for the bluetooth dongle and the software is free and it works! The usb does not, never did and never will. The seller is aware of this.

I took a lot of pics and video with it, not to mention that I downloaded ringtones. After about 3 months of working fine, I dropped my phone (not in the toilet this time LOL) and it could not get a network signal. At that time I needed to swap phones with a new one, but couldn't send my pics to my email. The store rep suggested that I buy a data cable there that cost $45 so that I could transfer to my computer! With technology the way it is, it would be a waste of time to buy a cable for that much to only transfer the stuff I had on my phone, when something new will be out in a month and the cable won't work with the new model. I stumbled upon the data cable on Amazon by mistake. Glad I did! I copped it for a fraction of what the store wanted, so if I never use it again then I still got my money's worth. The install was a little tricky but if you are determined to make it work then you will.

I purchased five of these, thinking my friends would love them. The manual is a small piece of paper that refers to an install directory that doesn't exist (and also assumes that your CD-ROM is your "G" drive). The set-up drivers were referred to as being for a device with a serial port, and this is supposed to be a USB device! The SIM card could not fully seat in the device. Of course, the device could not be seen by my computer. I was just thankful that this piece of junk did not trash my SIM card, and cause me to lose all of my addresses. I found this item elsewhere on the internet as a closeout, I think someone is just trying to dump some worthless junk. This is my first negative review of a product on eBay. People deserve to be warned about this product.

This phone has a very solid feel to it. The SLVR is not without flaws but show me a phone that isn't.

Camera (0.3 megapixel is pathetic in this day and age)
No high speed data (EDGE)

USB 1.1 transfer is VERY slow
Same old Moto OS ( Contacts list Stinks)
Conclusion:
If you're looking for a very sexy looking phone that has excellent reception and battery life I can think of no better choice than the SLVR. If you need a smart phone or all the latest bells and whistles there are better choices.

(More customer reviews)I love my new Treo Pro. I have been using it for about 2 weeks and already plan to hold on to it for the long haul. Little, history, I have had the Origional Treo, 200, 600, and 650. This is the best of them all. I swtiched two windows mobile 2 years ago because... well the PALM OS is dead in my book. That aside, I really missed the treo. I think palm gets how to build a nice device.
Keyboard: Works great. I find for a thumb keyboard and now with some experience I can fly with it. Personally, I love the thumb keyboard. Perfect for one handed operation with little compromise.
Thin: This thing fits very nicely into the pocket and the screen guard is excellent. I dont even know I have it with me and I never accidently Dial anyone. It fits in the hand wonderfully.
Buttons.. Some devices are going away from having so many buttons. However I like the ability to launch frequent programs. The Pro is great at letting you customize. (You have many hardware buttons and some of them can also be configured to have an Option + Hardware button application bound to them)
Also, you have hardware button access to volume control and wifi.
GPS: Works great. I installed and worked right away.
Power: this device is not a power pig. With normal use I get a good run off it. Mind you, I use applications on it all day along and SMS extensively.
Camera: I havent used it. Frankly, it doesnt matter how many mega pixels any phone has, it still just a phone camera. Quality is never that good. But it is good enough for those fun quick shots.
Dislikes: well, the screen is a standard windows mobile device screen. I was hoping for a new device, especially manufactured by HTC it would have a bit more kick to it. However, its very functional and does what I want. One thing I love is how they built into the keyboard access to the brightness control. This is something all devices should have. Its really hard to increase the brightness if you can read the screen. No problem with the treo.
The ALT key on the keyboard allows you to access characters not on the keyboard, including accented letters for various languages. What I dont like is that its a little window that shows up with about 8 characters show and you scroll to see more. Well there are a lot of characters, it would be better if they just filled the screen so you can quickly find the special character you want.
Windows Mobile Phone Dialer stinks! This is true in my opinion for any windows mobile device. Its a phone, but you have to navigate often 2 to 3 screens deep just to get a phone number. For example, you start typing someones name and the dialer appears. It instantly starts searching for a name. Great! When you select a name by pressing enter, it pulls up their contact screen. (HUH???) yes, you now get to see more info about them. I just want to DIAL the phone number. Long story short, for simple dialing its more complicated than it needs to be. Second, the Windows Mobile phone dialer always seems unresponsive and slow. Its a phone... but the phone is slow. it makes no sense. This is not a critisim against the treo, but if this your first Windows Mobile device you will be a bit disappointed with this.
My Final gripe is that it uses the Micro USB Cable. I dont know why. All I can say is that about 90% of my small electronic gizmos use Mini usb and now I have a new cable standard to deal with. I am sure there is some value to it, but I dont see it. Yes, the connector is smaller, but the cable is still just as thick and just as long. So why I need a thinner (by maybe a few hair widths) I dont know.

+ Tetherable wireless modem.
+ Ruggedized
+ Uses the same USB interface as my wife's and son's phones
I first ordered a different ruggedized VZW phone, because it was advertised with more features and was well reviewed. The problem was, the other brand of phone did not come with a USB cable, nor was one available. While I was searching around for the cable online, I tried out the extra features, such as the thermometer- it was off by 4 to 6 degrees Farenheit, making it pretty useless. The LED flashlight was nice, but not nicer than being able to surf the WEB surfside.
So, I exchanged it for this much less glitzy Motorola Barrage. I have already used it to get my email and upload documents far from any available Wi-Fi hot spots (cool!) and it has come in handy when I am in the shower and I get an important phone call (like from my wife). It also uses the same cord as the other cell phones in the family, which is great on trips.
It has some other surprisingly useful features. For example, I can make a call without looking at the phone because it pronounces the names of my contacts as I scroll through the list. Also, it is actually very useful to know who is calling without having to put down whatever I am carrying to look at the cell phone display. The voice recognition, e.g., "Call... John... Mobile," actually work on this phone for me and that is a first.
I already have several great digital cameras, so I always thought having a camera phone was sort of stupid. But the other day I bought something at the lumber store that didn't have a sticker. No problem, I just snapped a picture of the display tag, and the cashier keyed the SKU right in.
I put one of those 4 GB micro SD cards into the phone for $11 so I can transfer files back and forth from the phone to my laptop, or to other computers. That's when one gewfy 'feature' of the phone showed up. When you first plug it in to the USB cable, you get to choose between "Media Sync Mode" and "Modem Mode." Choosing "Media Sync" gives you the option to either download music, or NOT. "Not" mode does nothing... nada... Zippo... except to charge the battery. If you want to transfer files or photos, you have to go into "Tools" and select "USB Mass Storage." But even *that* is gewfy, because there are two menu items that have the phrase 'USB'. To transfer files, you want the one that results from, "MENU, Settings & Tools, 2. Tools, 8. USB Mass Storage," and *not* "MENU, Settings & Tools, 9. USB Mode." Pretty stinkin' ridiculous, eh?
The bluetooth pairing thingie works, but I can't get used to making or answering calls on a headset. Plus, people who walk around in public talking to themselves seem icky to me. I might get a car adapter someday, and I am confident this phone will work with it.
Other than that one weird menu glitch, I really, really like this phone.

(More customer reviews)I purchased the version with the 12-inch antenna to use in my home office, and got it a couple days ago. The package says it installs in a minute, and that's basically true. It took me 15 minutes because I read the instructions and had to think about where to put it, but if I did it again, I could probably actually take the items out of the package and get it in place and operating in a minute.
It works very well. My provider is AT&T, which I'm stuck with because I have an iPhone. My wife gets a great Verizon signal, but my AT&T signal ranged from no service to two bars at any given time at any place in my house. A few seconds after installing the Wilson device that changed, and now I get from 2 bars to 5 bars within my home office.
I looked at another device that claims to provide a whole-house improved signal, and perhaps it does. The problem for me is that installation seemed complicated due to the need for very wide separation between the antenna that receives the outside cell signal and the amplifier that retransmits the stronger signal, which included getting wiring through wall or ceilings etc. In the case of the Wilson device, all you need do is keep the two apart by 8 feet or so, which was better for me.
I'm not a techy but it seems that the tradeoff is that the separation requirements are lower with this Wilson device, but the rebroadcasted signal is less powerful, so the signal improvement range is not whole-house, but more room sized. Fortunately, that works fine for me.
I have three windows together set up like a bay window of sorts. I used the suction cups to mount the antenna in the upper right of that set of windows. I then ran the antenaa wire over the top of the windows to the amplifier hanging on the left. I didn't even affix the amplifier to the wall, it just hangs from the antenna cord. It's behind the curtain so it's not seen.
I placed the antenna, reached up and ran the wire over the sill, connected the amplifier to the end of the wire and plugged it in. A second later the light went green, meaning that the separation distance is OK, and my phone went from 1 bar to 4. Easy.
The packaging seems to emphasize use in cars and trucks, so I'm guessing that this is mostly used by truckers and commuters who drive through a lot of weak signal areas. But it also gives directions for installing in a home or office, which is what I did, and I can report that it works well for that purpose, at least in my situation.
