(More customer reviews)the seller sent an older version of this item. there are five releases. the original, revision b, revision c, revision d, and revision e. the seller sent an original product in a revision c package(i guess to trick me into thinking i got a newer version) the product overall is decent but it is not compatable with windows 7 and has no updatets for drivers available online. i have owned many network products and have always sided with linksys. i bought this product for its cheap price, yet then i had to go out and buy a linksys adapter anyways. just buy linksys and you will be satisfied.

After 3 days of incredible performance, 5 bars solid where before I was averaging 2-3, the Sabrent NT-WGHU High-Power 1000mw Wireless USB 802.11g Adapter crapped out. My PC detected its presence but where the reception bars are displayed was a big red X. Clicked the troubleshoot option but it only declared that it was not connected. Physical connection was fine. A reboot and driver reinstall was no help. Seller sent another unit but it too did not work!

EDIT: Maybe this will help others with the same problem. The problem was that some automatic Windows update (Windows 7) made the NT-WGHU software bomb out. When I did a Windows restore to a week earlier restore point the reinstall went flawlessly and the Sabrent came right back up to 5 bars. It's scary though that I have to check after any Windows update to see if everything still works. So I give it only 4 stars on reliability.
I must mention that Sabrent's telephone support was EXCELLENT. The number I got off the internet connected to California... not around the world. There was zero wait to talk to a tech. First guy gave a few recommendations on uninstalling/installing which didn't help. (I had done that stuff already but thought I'd dutifully try again). I called back within 15 minutes and immediately connected again, but to a different guy. He suggested the Windows restore routine which worked.

Hawking Wireless G USB Network Adapter with external SMA jack, Apple Compatible - HWUG1A Review

(More customer reviews)I've been waiting a couple years now for a wireless manufacture to "get it" and realize there is a market for a USB wi-fi dongle with a detachable antenna. For all the PC Card versions out there with detachable antenna, it's taken forever for someone to come out with a USB equivalent. Finally, Hawking has, with the HWUG1.
The version I purchased is the Macintosh version (HWUG1A). This comes with a driver from a chip maker called Ralink. Ralink has been doing a public beta with this driver for a few years now, and I was already familiar with it. It's in pretty solid shape now. I guess you could say it's ready for prime time. And now that Ralink are actually getting money for it directly from OEMs like Hawking, MacSense and a couple of others, the driver is likely to be maintained and kept in good condition through OS X upgrades. This is an important consideration because, unlike some other nework interfaces, a wi-fi dongle requires a driver apart from anything that comes with the standard Mac OS X install.
The screw on antenna uses the popular and common SMA connector. Hawking sells several omni-directional and directional antennas that are compatible. I have also attached it to a Cantenna which works very well. But lately my favorite solution is to add a Tritium Flatenna reflector. I like the Flatenna because it packs so flat and slips right into my laptop case with my papers. Ironically, the Flatenna doesn't require a detachable antenna. But I still regard this feature as important.
Overall I'm very pleased with my purchase. I wish it had cost a bit less. I have been able to purchase D-Link wi-fi USB dongles, that I was previously using with the Ralink beta driver, for as little as $20. I paid over $50 for the Hawking. Also, the D-Link comes with a nice, weighted USB stand and extension cable. The Hawking does not. But with the included, foldable antenna, there is less need of a remote stand base.

(More customer reviews)I had ordered a mini wireless USB adapter for 33 dollars thinking it was cheaper than the most.It did not work, it detected 2 connections and the quality of signal was bad.I was not able to go online with that adapter.I returned it and looked for a cheaper but more useful alternative.I found this after reading about Alfa antenna adapters.Alfas were more expensive (30-40 dollars) and I did not want to spend that much because I did not want to have a costly non-functioning adapter.I wanted to give this a chance instead since it was 12.99.If it did not work, it was no big deal.
WOW! It does work great.While the previous adapter detected only 2 networks, this detects 5-6 networks and the signal quality is good (60-80%.It stays connected at a decent speed.
I highly recommend this adapter for people who need more and reliable reception at a value price.
The only possible disadvantage of this adapter is its antenna protrusion.If you have preschoolers like I do, they might bump into it and break it.Apparently you can not have it all (perfect reception+ultra-compact design+good price) at once.
So far I am very happy with my purchase. Thanks to Amazon (for free super saver shipping) and the vendor.

Cisco-Linksys Range Plus Wireless USB Compact Adapter Review

(More customer reviews)The big problem with this adapter, is that if you use windows XP (which many people still do) and you have Service Pack 3 (which 99% of XP users do) it will work for a few weeks and then not work anymore, as I experienced and was later told by Linksys support. The adapter works fine with Windows Vista, XP - SP1 or SP2 -just not SP3. The specifications on the product packaging do not specify this issue and after calling Linksys 4 or 5 times perhaps you will get a representative who knows enough to inform you of the issue. Almost everyone who has XP has SP3. When an XP user installs updates SP3 will eventually be installed unless they manually install updates and refuse to install it. New Windows XP installations are SP3 at this point unless you specifically get SP2 (Which most people won't) so there is really no point in installing this adapter with Windows XP, unless you can uninstall XP3 as an update or install Windows XP SP2 and manually not install SP3. I was told by Linksys support to purchase Linksys Wusb54gsc, since it was made compatible with XP SP3. While the phone support was somewhat helpful and expedient, the company's customer satisfaction standards are pretty low. They refused to take this product back and send me the right adapter even though they were 100% at fault. Another company that doesn't really care about their customers - imagine that. Linksys should: ----- A) stop selling these adapters to Windows XP users ----- B) List the problem with XP SP3 on the package under compatibility ----- C) Issue a recall for all XP SP3 users and either replace the adapter with one that works with this application or fix current adapter. To find your systems compatibility (Operating system, version or year, service pack #, memory in ram and processor version and speed) click start, control panel and system.

D-Link DWA-130 Wireless N USB Adapter Review

(More customer reviews)I assumed when I bought this adapter that I wouldn't actually see the top speed any time soon, but after buying a TrendNet N-wireless/Gbit LAN I am happy to say it actually works. My local connection tends to register between 130 and 300Mbps according to the pop-up bubble in my taskbar (if you display your connections there as I do, you can hold the cursor over them to see what speed you are getting at any given moment).
Previously, with a regular wireless dongle I was getting 54Mbps tops. What an improvement. Increased local speeds have meant quicker video streaming and file copying for me. You have to have a router (or I guess maybe a cable/DSL modem directly connected to your PC) that will get N-wireless speed to do this so it won't do you much good if you use an older technology 801.11B/G with this dongle. And your Internet speed is more a result of your service provider so it may or may not help with that. But more speed is always better to me.
I use this on my laptop and I often shut the laptop so that it goes into Standby. I have had no serious problems reconnecting after coming out of Standby. I think once or twice I have had to "Repair" my connection from the taskbar. I don't even bother to use the little USB "stand" that comes with it since I can directly connect this to one of my USB ports, but this brings up a negative: This adapter is too fat for me to plug anything into the USB port that is adjacent to it. It's simply too wide. Unfortunately, especially on laptops where space is at a premium, the USB ports are not spaced well enough. I guess if I were traveling with the laptop that might become an issue since I might actually need all 3 of my USB ports and not want to carry around that little stand, but I think the compromise is worth it for the speed.
There is an amber light on the top of this dongle that goes on and off with network activity. Another negative that most other people may not have a problem with is that 2 out of 3 of my laptop USB ports are upside down. I have no idea why it was designed that way, but if I use those other 2 ports I obvioously can't see the light on the adapter. I like to know what's going on so this is not optimal for me.
Other than those two very system-specific issues, I love this adapter. It was easy to install with good directions (you have to run the CD prior to attaching it for a smoother install) and it appears to perform beautifully on my WinXP SP2 laptop.

On two different computers, one with Windows XP and and the other with Windows 7, the device would only work when the software was first installed, before the system was rebooted. After reboot, the device would NOT reconnect. Downloading the latest software didn't fix the problem, it only changed the failure. On Windows 7, the device would eventually reconnect if I disabled and re-enabled the device and otherwise fiddled with the networking stack in some indeterminate way. On XP, the device would reconnect, BUT, the system was unusable. A service named "WifiSvc.exe" would fail with a dialog reporting the failure. After closing the dialog, the service would be restarted and would fail again in one or two minutes, resulting in the dialog reappearing. This constantly reappearing failure dialog and intermittent network service rendered the system unusable.

(More customer reviews)So far, the product is working properly for me, and the product arrived sooner than I expected. I needed this product to provide wifi to my nintendo ds, because I did not want to take the security off my router, or switch to WEP. Here is what I did to set mine up, not sure if it will work for everyone, some of these WLAN products and drivers are strange.
1. Plugged the device into computer, and I ignored the "Found new hardware" thing that popped up from windows.
2. Inserted disc that came with product, and opened the files up from the D drive. I thin went into the wifi folder that was on the disc, and the the setup in admin mode. (I'm on vista 32 bit btw)
4. from there I just allowed the setup to run, and restarted my computer to finalize installation.
5. I opened the program and clicked the Mode tab at the top, and switched it to Access Point.
6. I think clicked the ICS tab, and applied it to my computers source of internet. (my ethernet cord.) From there I was able to successfully make a connection with the DS Lite.
I can't figure out how to change the SSID name, it takes the name of whatever you have your computer named as.

(More customer reviews)I purchased a Vista laptop a few months back and no longer needed my XP desktop on the first floor of the house. The problem was, I dreaded the prospect of having to get a super long ethernet extension cord and tediously staple-gunning it along the wall all the way down to where I wanted to put my computer in the basement. The other option was to get some sort of wireless card installed to my desktop, but I'm not that tech-savvy and generally try to avoid ulcer-causing IT-related nightmares.
So I procrastinated for a good long time, frozen by my aversion to either manual labor or the daunting task of setting up my own wireless network. The months passed --spring summer autumn winter / he sang his didn't he danced his did-- and one day I finally just went out and purchased this Netgear USB Adapter, and it was so much easier than I had ever expected to get it working. For one, it's a plug-in usb interface, so there wasn't the PCI card installation to deal with, and since this interface works so well, I wouldn't recommend that the novice user go out and get the PCI card version unless s/he has particular reason for it.
This is about all it took to receive wireless internet on my XP desktop:
1) Removed driver cd installation disc and usb adapter from box
2) Installed drivers from enclosed cd onto my desktop pc
3) Plugged in the usb adapter into a rear port on my desktop pc
4) Clicked "next," etc. as directed by the setup window after I plugged in the usb wireless adapter
And then I was online. I was a little worried that the wireless range wouldn't be very good since the router was on a different floor, but it turned out to be fine, for the most part. Once in a while the little green icon in the taskbar that indicates online connectivity blinks red, but it's only for a second and isn't enough to cause much interruption in my site browsing activities.
I'm not sure if the setup process was made easier because both my router and this adapter are made by Netgear, but for whatever the reason, it was simple for me to set up and use so I'm recommending it. That is all... I hope my review has been helpful to you in your hunt for the perfect network adapter!
