(More customer reviews)My old laptop died and I needed a new one fast since I had a paper due in two weeks. I ordered this 17.3 inch laptop and they gave me a delivery date only one day before my paper's due date. Imagine my surprise when it came in only four days later. I was able to plug it in, run a cable to my old computer and was up and running that day. I got my paper don in plenty of time for a rewrite and wound up with an A in the course. By the way, I'm at ITT Tech and do know something about computers. Toshibas are the best. My old computer was a VAIO from Sony and though I only had it for two years, and I paid a lot for it since it was top of the line, the DVD player went out six months after I bought it, the sound was horrible and the screen started going out on it just a few weeks before went out completely. It was in the shop several times.
Now my new Toshiba is perfect and I really like the fact it has a numeric keypad and I can do math calculations on it.

(More customer reviews)This is a great laptop for the price. It's fast, the picture is clear and I love the number key pad on the right side. My only complaint was the sound. There isn't much volume and the sound was weak and tinny. That was easily fixed with a $29.00 Gigaware speaker I bought at Radio Shack that sits on top of your open laptop. The sound is incredible for $30 and it plugs in with a USB cord. I would recommend this computer and this speaker.

Dell Latitude D420 12" Laptop Core Duo 1.2Ghz 1GB RAM Review

(More customer reviews)I have had this D420 for 2 years and it has never failed me no matter what. I take it every day to college. And to get to my school, I commute in the crowded NY subway for 1 hour one-way! I also take it when I travel. So far it has been in London (UK), Moscow (Russia), and twice in Kiev (Ukraine).
This computer is very thin and weights only 3 lb. It has the magnesium-alloy frame and high-quality plastic outer shell. It is really rugged and rigid - no flex whatsoever. It has withstood the beating very well - there are practically no marks or scratches after 2 years.
My laptop came with Core Solo U1300 1.06GHz processor, 1.5GB of RAM, and Windows XP Pro. The system is very stable - never had any problems with it. I installed AVG antivirus, Windows Defender, and Win Patrol HIPS. With all this running, I am able to use MS Word 2007, MS Excel 2007, Firefox (several tabs open), and Media Player at the same time with relative ease. I usually surf Internet, watch YouTube or Hulu, and do light photo editing with XNView. With an external DVD drive, I watch movies and rip CDs. Also, I work with Word, PowerPoint, and Excel every day. I even do some occasional gaming (WarCraft 3 runs smoothly on medium/low settings!) But do not expect this laptop to be lightning-fast. And do not try to play Crysis! This computer takes its time at the start-up (nothing too big though) and when opening multiple apps.
The computer is very power-efficient. The battery lasts for several hours and easily gets me through my day in college. The wireless card works just fine. I use it to connect to my campus network. At my home, I use wired DSL modem via the network card - no problems here either. When I went to Russia and Ukraine, I used the built-in dial-up modem - worked like charm. There is a slot for a Cellular HSDPA modem - never used it. I like the SD Card slot - use it a lot. The speaker is really tiny, but I use external speakers or headphones for music. The keyboard is really comfortable. I have had something like a dozen laptops, and I think that d420 has one of the best keyboards I have seen so far. The touchpad is good too, though I usually use a wireless mouse.
To extend connectivity and avoid plugging and unplugging numerous cords every day, I bought a Dell Media Base with built-in DVDRW drive. Now my DSL modem, speakers, printer, and power cord are constantly connected to the Base and the d420 sits on top of it. This also allowed me to move all the cords to the back, so they do not get in the way.
Long story short: I am really happy with it - highly recommended. You can also find very good reviews of this laptop on notebookreview and notebookcheck.

Toshiba's Satellite M series notebooks are designed for multimedia and the M115-S3094 is a low cost system with media specific features. The most notable of these is the ability for the system to be used for DVD or CD playback without requiring the OS to be running. About the only really multimedia feature missing is a TV tuner.
Powering the M115-S3094 is the Intel Core Duo T2050 processor. While this is one of the lowest dual core models currently available, it still is a step up from the older single core Pentium M processors. It comes with 512MB of PC2-4200 DDR2 memory which is standard for a budget oriented system but won't run as smoothly as one with a full gigabyte.
Storage is also fairly average for a budget notebook system. The 80GB hard drive provides plenty of space for most users needs although don't expect to put too many digital video files or else you might fill it up quickly. A dual layer DVD burner is also available for playback or recording or music, movie or data CDs and DVDs.
While most companies are moving to the larger 15.4" wide screen LCDs, Toshiba uses a smaller 14.1" screen. This provides plenty of space for viewing without making the system to large. It also uses a TruBrite screen for better video playback.
Probably the best thing about the Satellite M115-S3094 though is the price. The price is quite reasonable for the amount of features provided

(More customer reviews)I almost didn't buy this laptop because of several reviewers mentioning issues with a "heat spot" where the right wrist would be when typing. This particular model had everything I needed, and some more to boot, and I knew I wasn't going to do much typing as I mostly use it for electronic circuit analysis which is 90% mouse use. So I bought a ... Kensington external keypad in which to facilitate entering in different component values without having to hunt an peck on the keyboard and burning my wrist badly.
For me, it is a fabulous set-up. It works well.
Oh yeah, I was curious about that hot spot, so I left the thing on all day and checked it out for myself. Just for clarification for the benefit of others, the heat spot is about 1 degree (fahrenheit) warmer than the rest of the keyboard area. There is just enough difference in temperature that our sensitive nerves can detect it, but it definately is nothing to write home about. In fact, I was disappointed. Where I live it can get chilly sometimes and I was thinking of using it as a portable heater. But alas, it is not to be so. But still, that Kensington keypad is so convenient as it comes with 2 USB ports as well. Because I thought I was going to be getting burnt by the heat spot, I also bought a USB powered fan. Now that is unique! I plug it into the little keypad USB port and the fan is positioned on a flexible, positionable rod and provides enough air circulation to keep me comfortable but doesn't blow my paper around the office. I haven't had to use it to cool down my wrist yet, but maybe with time the hot spot will grow and grow...until it is like a furnace. Then I will resolve to buy a summer time laptop and keep this one til winter. But for now, it's a winner in my book.

Based upon a 2.0 GHz Intel Celeron processor, the Satellite 1135-S155 clearly sports less raw power than its pricier Pentium 4-equipped Satellite counterparts, but Toshiba has matched this CPU with a whopping 512 MB RAM (expandable to 1024 MB), a capable 32 MB Intel 852GM graphics chipset, and an ample 40 GB hard drive. Consequently, the system is quite satisfactory for most common business and personal applications apart from high-end games and 3-D animation packages.

The Satellite 1135-S155 is unexpectedly portable at 13 by 11 by 1.7 inches and just 6.2 pounds. Under ideal conditions, battery life is estimated at three hours.

Compaq Presario CQ60-220US 15.6-Inch Laptop Review

(More customer reviews)The Compaq Presario CQ60-210US is a very nice, feature rich laptop for home or student use. I was truely impressed with ease of setup, which took about 15 minutes from opening the box and connecting the battery.
This is a rather large laptop and it is somewhat heavy, but not unreasonably so. Here are my observations:
* Large 15.6" screen is very sharp
* Keyboard includes a numeric keypad
* Good sized Hard Drive
* DL DVD RW
* Fast Processor (beats the heck out of my old ACER)
* Lots of RAM (expandable to 4GB)
* 3 USB ports
* Built in Wi-Fi support
* Built in Eathernet
* Built in Modem (but why? :-)
* Built in 5-1 Memory Card reader
Note that this laptop does not have any card expansion slots! This isn't a problem for me, but might be an issue for those wanting to add Firewire or other non-included (like DV) support.
The system scored a respectable 3.8 on the Windows performance scale, which is fairly good for a laptop.
Overall, I am very pleased with Presario CQ60-210US! Highly Recommended!

Have to wiggle the plug to get it to charge and be careful that you don't bump it or you have to wiggle the cord again. This should not be happening, the laptop is only about 6 months old. This laptop comes with no web-cam. I would not reccomend this laptop to anyone.

It's brand new and much improved from my older version. I love the look and functionality of it. The screen is nice and big for easier viewing, yet not too big. Laptop is fairly light given it's size. Haven't tested all the functionality yet since I just received it not too long ago, but so far it's great!

So far, a week later, this computer is just as advertised. The screen is great, the features are great also. Be sure to make your recovery disks early, however. They take awhile, and that's a Windows 7 issue, not an issue with this computer. I'd buy it again, and will update this review as I get more experience with it. See the Walmart reviews.

Dell D620 Laptop Duo Core with Windows XP Review

(More customer reviews)The Dell Latitude line of notebooks are well built business machines. The Latitudes and XPS lines are a tier higher than the entry-level Inspiron Series.
The case is constructed of metal with plastic trim along the LCD monitor. There are 4 USB ports which allow for a variety of peripherals to be attached such as portable hard drives. There is a headphone and microphone jack and an outlet for a monitor. The keyboard is comfortable to the touch. In addition to the mousepad, there is a pointing stick with 2 buttons below the space key, allowing for either to control the cursor. The 'spill proof' keyboard is one of the biggest assets (I have only spilled a drink on it once, where I just wiped off the keyboard without a problem in function).
The WIFI capabilities is reliable and easy to set up. The hard drive is quiet, as is the optical drive. The strike zone hard drive is resistant to light drops.
Performance of the notebook is excellent with the Dual Core processors. This notebook easily handles virus scanning, working on a MS Office document, internet browser and listening to music without any problem. The integrated graphics allows for basic games like Tiger Woods Golf, Mafia, NHL Hockey, the Godfather, for example.
Battery life is very good for the 6 cell (about 4 hours).
One of the greatest attractions that I have for this line of notebooks is the lack of 'bloatware' - unnecessary programs that are installed into your computer (trial programs, multiple internet service providers, advertisements, etc).
Overall, with a spill resistant keyboard and drop zone hard drive, this notebook will take the daily knocks of the regular commuter. This is no Panasonic Toughbook but it will survive your daily use.
VERDICT
Highly recommend this notebook.

(More customer reviews)I've had a 12" iBook G4 since 2005 and it's still my favorite notebook for browsing the internet, writing letters, and even reading pdf's. It's very lightweight and I consider the screen the perfect size. It's held up very well. One of the keys has a hairline crack and one of the rubber feet on the bottom fell off but I clean it every month or so and it still looks almost new.
My only criticism is that it gets a little warm so I keep it on top of a clipboard when holding it in my lap. No viruses, no crashes, no worries.
When netbooks started becoming popular a couple of years ago, I had to laugh because I already have a lightweight, handy netbook. In fact, I'm using it right now to write this review. Given a choice between a new Asus or Dell netbook or a used iBook G4 for the same price, I would take the G4 without thinking about it for a second.

(More customer reviews)The Power PC G5 iMac series were/ are great computers. Like all Macs, their operating systems (from 10.3 to 10.4 for the G5 series) are very user friendly and naturally resistant to most computer viruses. They are solid performers, rarely crash and have a service life of 5-6 times that of PCs from a similar vintage. I'm still running my G5 iMac 4+ years after I bought it, and it works as well and as flawlessly as the first day I turned it on. The on-screen presentation and dock functioning are great, as are the customizable widgets that put a wealth of information updates at your fingertips (literally at the click of the center or right mouse button), and yes, that is customizable too (like almost everything else on the Mac).
As far as software goes, Macs are unparalleled with creative and artistic programs, especially when it comes to the learning curve and picking up new editing/ creating skills. They come with "iLife" pre-loaded, and this offers all that most users need to edit and manage their digital music, picture and video libraries. Do you have an aspiring home-video producer in your house? Then Mac's and iLife are the best place to start. And when you're ready for full-featured, professional music, image and video production, Apple has a full line of software ready to go. You'll likely be able to find programs like "Production Suite" and "Final Cut Pro" at serious discounts for these older G5 iMacs. Even in standard user applications like word processing, spreadsheets, and audio/video presentations, Apple has come a long way with its "iWork" line and (at least in my opinion) puts Microsoft Office Suite to shame. Within iWork, users get "Pages," "Keynote," and "Numbers," each of which rivals "MS Word," "PowerPoint" and "Excel" respectively. The documents, presentations and rough databases are superior and easier to learn than anything I've encountered in Microsoft's Office Suite. Numbers takes some getting used to, but once you are there, its quality and vibrancy make it worth the effort. My only complaint with the G5 series computers is that some of them don't run OS 10.5 (Leopard) very well.
Bottom line: I used to be a PC guy. Then I bought a Mac and haven't looked back. Yes, Macs are pricier, but just as in everything else in life: you get what you pay for. The G5 series iMac is a fine machine, and their resale value holds better than any thing in the PC world.

(More customer reviews)I purchased a Vista laptop a few months back and no longer needed my XP desktop on the first floor of the house. The problem was, I dreaded the prospect of having to get a super long ethernet extension cord and tediously staple-gunning it along the wall all the way down to where I wanted to put my computer in the basement. The other option was to get some sort of wireless card installed to my desktop, but I'm not that tech-savvy and generally try to avoid ulcer-causing IT-related nightmares.
So I procrastinated for a good long time, frozen by my aversion to either manual labor or the daunting task of setting up my own wireless network. The months passed --spring summer autumn winter / he sang his didn't he danced his did-- and one day I finally just went out and purchased this Netgear USB Adapter, and it was so much easier than I had ever expected to get it working. For one, it's a plug-in usb interface, so there wasn't the PCI card installation to deal with, and since this interface works so well, I wouldn't recommend that the novice user go out and get the PCI card version unless s/he has particular reason for it.
This is about all it took to receive wireless internet on my XP desktop:
1) Removed driver cd installation disc and usb adapter from box
2) Installed drivers from enclosed cd onto my desktop pc
3) Plugged in the usb adapter into a rear port on my desktop pc
4) Clicked "next," etc. as directed by the setup window after I plugged in the usb wireless adapter
And then I was online. I was a little worried that the wireless range wouldn't be very good since the router was on a different floor, but it turned out to be fine, for the most part. Once in a while the little green icon in the taskbar that indicates online connectivity blinks red, but it's only for a second and isn't enough to cause much interruption in my site browsing activities.
I'm not sure if the setup process was made easier because both my router and this adapter are made by Netgear, but for whatever the reason, it was simple for me to set up and use so I'm recommending it. That is all... I hope my review has been helpful to you in your hunt for the perfect network adapter!
