GlobeTrotter® Express 442 - Unlocked 3G Card Review

GlobeTrotterĀ® Express 442 - Unlocked 3G Card
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before plugging it into a Mac with Snow Leopard, it requires to install the Leopard drivers from option.com, if not, it will cause a kernel panic. Connects fast, it's low profile, and if you use Windows or an older version of Mac OS X, it has a self contained software and drivers (no CD needed). Can be configured (obviously) from System Settings. Great product, I highly recommend it.

Cisco-Linksys BEFSR11 Cable/dsl Router with 1-PORT Review

Cisco-Linksys BEFSR11 Cable/dsl Router with 1-PORT
Average Reviews:

This lil' linky does wonders for it's price. I got it up and going in about 15 minutes. First I connected my cable modem [provided by roadrunner] directly to the WAN port and out from the LAN port I connected my already existing HUB with both my computers already connected, and in about 2 - 3 steps and one restart both my computers were prtected by a firewall. It couldn't get any easier. I was prepared by downloading the latest version of the firmware before i even got it in the mail and before anything i upgraded and everything worked perfect.
I recommend this product for anyone with a Cable/DSL connection and more than one computer. That includes beginners and advanced users. A definate plus to anyones home office.
It takes more time to reconfigure applications like napster, webcam32, and ICQ than it does to setup the router. And don't forget a 3' CAT 5, because it doesn't come with the product.

Us Robotic Modem Usr263093-Oem Pci 56K W Rohs Soft Modem Review

Us Robotic Modem Usr263093-Oem Pci 56K W Rohs Soft Modem
Average Reviews:

I ordered this a couple weeks ago based in part on the one 5 star review. What I failed to notice is the letters "OEM" in the product name. Installing this modem is a breeze if you've ever installed anything in a desktop PC. Open your box... pick the right empty slot plug it in, close your box and plug in your phone line.
Immediately I was able to get the modem to dial a number. But I couldn't hear the dial tone or have any conversation thru my USB Logitec PC headset.
I contactd US Robotics thru their website. They replied - "this is an OEM product. Conact the people you purchased it from."
Ha. Now what?
I found and installed a telephony software program called Active Call Center. But apparently it does not work with this particular modem.
That's where I stand at this point... with no obvious place to turn to for help.
I don't understand why US Robotics would allow Amazon to sell one of their OEM products. At least they might display a prominent warning that you won't get support from the manufacturer.

This seems to be working dsl router with lots of features.
This verion of 3347 has no web interface, cli command only.
It shipped with an empty document CD which leaves the end user no where to get this litte device going. I have struggle to bring up the DSL link, but what about the rest LAN or vlan settings ?/!

U.S. Robotics (USR5610B) 56k V92 Pci95/98/nt4/w2k/xp Review

U.S. Robotics (USR5610B) 56k V92 Pci95/98/nt4/w2k/xp
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a quality controller based V.92 internal PCI modem from USR that will run under both the Windows and Linux OS's. If you are not familiar with controller based modems, it simply means that the modem has circuitry onboard that processes the data - instead of sending it to the CPU - so the system will not get bogged down in processing.
I have had a great experience with this modem, and have not seen or experienced the connection loss or problems that the previous reviewer posted. As for the company, U.S. Robotics is well known and trusted and provides current drivers and updates on its website.
Conclusion: Although this modem does run more than controllerless / winmodems, it will definitely improve you dial-up experience and is worth the money in my humble opinion.

USB MODEM UTSTARCOM 175 BROADBAND ACCESS PHONE CARD VERIZON CDMA Review

USB MODEM UTSTARCOM 175 BROADBAND ACCESS PHONE CARD VERIZON CDMA
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Living out in the sticks, dialup internet access was what I had to live with for ages. When Verizon added a tower that improved my cell phone coverage, I started wondering if it was an option for my PC as well. I'm not an early adopter of new technology and waited until neighbors had tried various options before I was willing to try this service. I've been using an extra phone line for the computer, the removal of which will save me half what this service costs monthly. Still it's an extra thirty bucks, so it has to be worth it to me.
Some neighbors are using the satellite service but aren't completely satisfied. The only negative comment I got about this little modem and the service was that there is a limit on how much access you get--5 gig/mo--which means you won't be downloading movies or playing internet games much, if at all. Since this isn't an issue for me, I decided to give it a try.
It is definitely faster than dialup access even at the fastest dialup modem speed. I use AOL and the TCP/IP connect is about 3-5 times faster, then all that stuff they display loads much faster as well and I can go about my business without waiting for more than a few seconds. That said, the transfer rate doesn't compare with the Comcast speed of my daughter's setup in town. This service is faster than dialup, but not 'blinding' by any means. As an example, in the past when I tried to download something, I noted the transfer rate on dialup was something like 4-6k per second. Sigh!! Things took forever and sometimes wouldn't download at all. I downloaded the update for my Kindle last night with this little modem and noted 50k/sec transfer rate. Certainly a lot better.
The speed does seem to depend on 'how crowded the air waves' are (or however you'd say that in technospeak :) and how many bars you get. I've found the number of bars is the same as what I get on my Verizon cell phone. Where my desktop PC is located, it varies from 0 to 2. I have ordered the antenna in hopes of boosting that.
Installing the little modem is as easy as running the CD installation disk that comes with it and then plugging the modem into a USB port when prompted to do so. It also comes with a cable in case you want to plug into a port on the back of a desktop PC and set the modem somewhere with easier access. You can leave the modem attached all the time if you want. It turns off when you turn the PC off. When on, it flashes a blue light, which means it's ready to pick up a signal. To connect your computer to the broadband service, you use the modem software (push the 'connect' button), which to me, seems to be equivalent to turning your cell phone on (the modem has a phone number). It is then ready for you to 'make a call', i.e. connect to the internet using some software such as Internet Explorer or AOL.
You can leave the modem connected all day like you would leave your cell phone on and not affect the data limit since that only happens when you are connected to and using the internet. If you use the internet with your cell phone, you know there is a data limit with it as well. This is sort of the same thing.
The modem software will show you what your usage is each time you connect so you're aware of what you've used so far. Sending emails, Facebook updates, photos, etc uses part of your allocation, as well as downloading files, photos, etc. Various internet screen refresh activities uses some. Watching streaming video or playing games uses a lot. Listening to internet radio uses enough that you probably won't want to do that all the time. For me, after 5 days of email, Facebook postings, attempting to watch some short videos and listening to the AOL radio one day just to see what impact it would have, plus downloading the Kindle software update, posting a few Amazon reviews, and the like, I've used about 225mg, or about 50mg a day, so I should be able to stay within the limit easily with no change to my regular internet activities.
I still cannot really watch streaming videos such as those on YouTube with my 1-2 bar connectivity, without breaks while it reloads the next bit. Even though it reloads faster than before, I have to want to see it pretty badly to put up with that.
One concern: This morning there seemed to be a problem with the modem connecting to Verizon. It was resolved within half an hour and it is Black Friday, which may or may not have anything to do with it. I will update if that happens again, but otherwise it has connected fast and remained connected without problem.
Bottom line: It is definitely better than dialup--for me about 5 times faster. That's not seriously fast, but acceptable and worth the extra money to me, especially since I don't have any options other than satellite which is affected by weather, trees, and costs more as well.

X6 Adsl Modem/router Review

X6 Adsl Modem/router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a DSL user and it seems there are not too many companies catering my needs, which are a combined modem and wireless router. I made the mistake of getting such a box (2wire) from ATT. It would broadcast about 1 meter (I am not kidding), meaning that I had to use an ethernet cable. My next mistake was to get a linksys router to put in front of 2wire (using the 2wire as a modem only). Everytime there was a storm or electrical surge, one or the other reset and claimed the same IP address. I had wires running everywhere and learned more about windows networking than I ever wanted to know. I had to go static IP addresses and bypass DCHP to get anything to work. So, I was trying to choose between d-link and zoom and saw one favourable review for zoom (Lopez), so I took a chance on it. As he says, it works as advertised and I am down to one small box and very few wires. The wireless is faster than the linksys. I only give the warning that, if you are like me and have other things installed that you are switching out, you should uninstall any software and get rid of old network connections. Also, this router has an on/off switch that is set to off. I suffered a momentary heart skip when I plugged it in and no light came on. The manual is fairly good (pdf) but is not savable on hard disk which is not too reasonable (you can print it). Now, if ATT would bundle a quality product like this, it would surely enhance its image as an IP. Does that notion require a Harvard MBA?

I purchased the advertised NEW modem. I recieved an opened box / used modem. The rubber feet had dust and hairs on them from the previous owner. So I feel like I got ripped off. My advice is to watch your back if you choose to do business with Westronics / Amazon. You could get ripped off. The modem operation is only average and does seem slightly slow. However, in my case, I don't know if this slowness is because this is actually a defective returned item or if this is the normal modem operation. What a scam !

Voice/data/fax World Modem V92 Universal Pci Review

Voice/data/fax World Modem V92 Universal Pci
Average Reviews:

This is an excellent modem. I tried 3 different modems to get my PC answering system working. Modem 1 14.99, did not work at all. Modem 2 35.00 only fax/data worked-no voice. Modem 3 this modem worked perfectly. It was detected by Windows XP. It comes with all drivers to install Com ports and drivers. Don't waste your time trying cheaper modems. Go with this one first. You will not be dissapointed.
This modem does not come with software. But it works perfectly with all programs I tried-The phonebot, ezvoice3.3, Advanced Call Center 7.0 and several others. Good documentation and excellent support via the internet if you need it. Note: This is the first time I ever reviewed any purchase. It worked so well I felt they deserved the good props.

Best Data Products 56USBP 56Kbps USB External Controller Modem Review

Best Data Products 56USBP 56Kbps USB External Controller Modem
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This modem causes nothing but problems with my iBook. I can log on to my ISP, but when I disconnect, the computer continues to show the status as "Disconnecting" forever. The only way to reconnect is to restart the machine. And, on restart, I get a kernel panic every time before the shutdown process properly completes. Bestdata's tech support suggested that I try other modem scripts on the installation CD. I tried all 4 without success.
It's possible that the problem was specific to my Mac. If you decide to take a risk and try this product despite my experiences, make sure that you experiment with the product immediately. Amazon won't take it back after 30 days, and although Bestdata offers a warranty, they won't give you a cash refund if you have compatibility problems. I waited too long to try it and got stuck with a lemon.

SmartLink SL1800 V.92 56K Data/Fax PCI Modem Review

SmartLink SL1800 V.92 56K Data/Fax PCI Modem
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I installed this modem into an Intel D915GEVLK motherboard with Windows XP Home SP3
32 bit and IE7, 2 Gb Corsair PC2-4200 DDR2 SDRAM. I took a chance with this brand
instead of my usual USR/GVC/Agere/Conexant modems I install.
Windows immediately recognized it on booting up as new hardware, and installed it
with the drivers on my OEM Microsoft system disk. Nice surprise for an off-brand
modem. It even shows the COM port and activity in the system tray lower right with
the usual modem connection icon. It was installed as COM3, the serial port being
COM1. I never saw any other modem with a COM port icon in the task tray, pretty
neat if you ask me and a nice surprise too. It was like wow, look at that! It has
the telephone line pass-through for a desk phone if you want that feature to use
for dialing a fax number the old-fashioned way instead of using Windows dialer.
So far the modem has worked very well for me, connecting fast and with good speed
on the download, upload sides. This is my backup connection. When the cable goes
down, I want my anti-virus and anti-spyware updates before my scans run daily. So
far I haven't tried sending a Windows fax document using Office, but I bet it will
work just fine too once I install Word, or an Office suite of any year.
This modem is a decent buy in my opinion and worth the price.

I plugged it into my PC's USB port, a setup wizard instantly popped up, and quickly installed the software needed to connect. Once the program loaded completely, I tried to hit connect and was greeted with a connection failed message. So, I sent into settings and changed the following for my AT&T data plan:
APN: WAP.CINGULAR
UN: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
PW: CINGULAR1
Once those were applied, I was able to connect with speeds up to 1.8Mbps (according to dslreports.com/mspeed). Make sure you have your laptop/desktop near a window and not pushed up against a wall or your card may not connect right away.
