(More customer reviews)(...) Apparently there is a software problem (shipped product with wrong software from what i'ev heard). I'm not a pro at all as far as computer but i do have determination, i spent about 7 hours trying to figure this thing out and i ended up getting the solution from some one else on a dell forum. they told me that they have the same chip as the ones from many other companies so i downloaded some drivers from linksys support, fiddled with them for about an hour becuase i wasen't completly sure how to update the card with those drivers but it randomly fixed the problem and it's all good. the card is through about 4 layers of drywall and upstairs (about 100 feet) and it's still geting 3 out of 5 bars and 48mbps.

US Robotics V.90-V.92 Internal PCI Faxmodem Review

(More customer reviews)I am talking about the US Robotics V.92 PCI Fax Modem USR5699B used on an IBM desktop computer with Windows XP. First the BAD NEWS and then, believe it or not, the GOOD NEWS. By sheer chance and good luck I stumbled upon a "solution".
I think the name "U.S." combined with the word "Robotics" fooled me into thinking that I might be getting a good product. Thus began a nightmare that often kept me up late at night for an entire week. Immediately after installing the "US Robotics ControlCenter" from the installation CD I tried installing the "US Robotics Internet Call Notification" feature and was rewarded with the following cryptic response:
"No U.S. Robotics V92 Modem was detected. Please install your modem before running Setup again". So I repeated the installation and back came the same error message. I was totally flaberbasted. Feeling totally helpless I called their tech support at 888-428-9450. After being guided through a seemingly endless labyrinth of Windows "Device Manager" dialogs I was able to install the "Call Notification" feature. My troubles are over, I thought. On my first attempt to connect I got speeds as low as 28.8 kbps and if I was lucky as high
as 46.6 kpbs. The generic modem that I was trying to replace consistently returned speeds as high as 52 kbps. Of course the actual connect speed may be a little lower but I had never seen anything this bad on a modem. I uninstalled and re-installed this modem between 4-6 times every day. A total of between 28-42 times since I got the modem. Things actually got even worse. When I tried to dial-up it reported "No Dial Tone" even after I could clearly hear the dial tone on my phone. I could not send faxes. I was on my last nerve and tried another uninstall,
but this time differently.
Instead of using Start .. Settings .. Control Panel .. Add/Remove Programs .. I UNINSTALLED the modem using Device Manager. I then RESTARTED the computer and allowed Windows XPs PlugNPlay detect the modem. I resisted the urge to use the installation CD. I used Start .. Settings .. Control Panel .. Network and Internet Connections to create a new Dial-Up icon .. it connected on my first try at 48.0 kbps and I was able to send faxes. It will occasionally failed to connect on dial-up but succeeded after I rebooted the computer. Whew, what a nightmare ! I am now using this horrible little piece of U.S. Robotics technology to search for a new modem online. I will order my new modem, try it out and then return this U.S. Robotics V.92 modem to WALMART. No more U.S.eless Robotics for me. Enough is enough.

(More customer reviews)well i am having so many problems with this item that i don't know what to do, the software that it came with will not work with my windows vista computer, (i think that maybe vista is the real one at fault here,)but it was working for a little while, kind of,but it suddenly stopped, anyway i've just about everything, even restoring the system to factory settings, which is always a last resort for me, NOTHING. anyone have any ideas aside from buying another modem?

(More customer reviews)I purchased one of these from a big box store. Brought it home, inserted it into computer motherboard, installed driver. At first all seemed well until I realized there were certain fax machines it could not communicate with. It drove me crazy trying to troubleshoot what as wrong with this thing. I've reinstalled drivers, troubleshot the line, controlled for every variable -- literally spent hours -- pulling my hair out trying to get what should be a straightforward device card to work. Through my research I discovered through various online reviews that this card has an extremely troubled reputation.
It is a real shame I spent a couple dozen bucks on a piece of hardware that doesn't work more than half of the time. Save your money and your hair and don't you make the same mistake I did.

SmartLink SL1800 V.92 56K Data/Fax PCI Modem Review

(More customer reviews)I installed this modem into an Intel D915GEVLK motherboard with Windows XP Home SP3
32 bit and IE7, 2 Gb Corsair PC2-4200 DDR2 SDRAM. I took a chance with this brand
instead of my usual USR/GVC/Agere/Conexant modems I install.
Windows immediately recognized it on booting up as new hardware, and installed it
with the drivers on my OEM Microsoft system disk. Nice surprise for an off-brand
modem. It even shows the COM port and activity in the system tray lower right with
the usual modem connection icon. It was installed as COM3, the serial port being
COM1. I never saw any other modem with a COM port icon in the task tray, pretty
neat if you ask me and a nice surprise too. It was like wow, look at that! It has
the telephone line pass-through for a desk phone if you want that feature to use
for dialing a fax number the old-fashioned way instead of using Windows dialer.
So far the modem has worked very well for me, connecting fast and with good speed
on the download, upload sides. This is my backup connection. When the cable goes
down, I want my anti-virus and anti-spyware updates before my scans run daily. So
far I haven't tried sending a Windows fax document using Office, but I bet it will
work just fine too once I install Word, or an Office suite of any year.
This modem is a decent buy in my opinion and worth the price.

This modem does the same job and the price has really come down. Installed with no problems or device drivers needed right out of the box in my Windows 7 64BIT computer.
I don't think you can beat this modem, especially considering the price and ease of installation.

(More customer reviews)This modem works fine so far. I didn't have trouble getting the MOH to install, I just couldn't find it. Right-clicking the application icon in the system tray of the desktop displays this option. I am not very computer literate, so I didn't think to look there. You must run the software installation FIRST before hardware installation according to the instruction book. Even so , my computer could not find the both drivers. I ended up going thru "my computer" and clicking on the "drivers" and then they installed.( There is an audio driver also). So far everything is running good.
I also had to change a setting on ISP dial up box so that it would choose the correct modem. I just wanted to add these
things in case there is someone like myself out there who
purchases this. Hope this helps.
