After much frustration I called Belkin and was told that this product does not support LaserWriter printers. Belkin was not very helpful and returning the product means I am out the shipping. If you are considering this product call to get specific compatiblity specs.

(More customer reviews)Firstly this wireless serial adapter is much slicker than IOGEAR's. And for the price it should be. This unit has no dip switches and is slightly more compact.
As with IOGEAR's wireless serial adapter, this device should be DCE and not DTE. Take a look around at serial devices. They are DTE. So why make a product that will require the use of a clumsy and bulky null-modem cable 95% of the time? In my case 100% of the time.
WARNING!!! This device does not support low speed serial such as 9600 baud. This is a must for my purposes as I was hoping to use this to configure networking elements such as routers, switches, firewalls, et el. 99% of which have a default console setting of 9600 baud.
Also I would have liked to see a fully self contained unit. Meaning no need for an AC adapter. Yes, this unit MUST be plugged into an AC outlet to function! The necessity of an AC adapter completely negates any claim of "cleans up cable clutter". Also I foresee instances where AC power will be hard to obtain (e.g. only DC power available).
I put some thought into this last night and it would have been ideal for this adapter to have a small rechargeable lithium ion battery built in for short term use. For long term use this device would have two options 1. USB and 2. AC. USB power cable and AC power adapter would connect to the same power input on the device and would also facilitate battery recharging.
As it stands this device is neither convenient or useful. It is far more cumbersome to use than simply plugging in a console cable.

(More customer reviews)As computers advance, you see less RS232 ports available in a typical PC. You may need these ports for various tasks, such as connecting card readers, elder hardware, etc. To make situation even worse, computer manufacturers limit amount of available PCI slots, so you can't just plug in extension card. Only choice is to get PCI-E RS232 card, which is still quite uncommon.
The card reviewed has 2 external and 2 internal slots, which means, that besides the external devices, you can connect also internal devices to it, such as card readers. Previous reviewer complains that there was no information how to connect internal connectors correctly. This is wrong. If you look at PCB, you'll see small white triangle near the each connector. This is the marking, where the red stripe on connection cable should be matching. This is rule of thumb in PC world for last 20 years at least, so if you need such a specific device, than you should know also connection pinouts.
The driver installation went OK, and card itself works properly.

(More customer reviews)Can't get my new laptop to recognize a serial transcription pedal plugged into the USB via the Belkin because there is no Windows 7 driver. It's not mentioned on the CD that came with the cable. Nor is there a Windows 7 driver available on the Belkin site. Works fine on an old XP machine but that's not the one I bought the cable for since that pc also has serial. Windows 7 has been out a while so I wonder if Belkin even plans on creating drivers for that OS for its existing cables.

USB to RS232 DB9 Serial Cable + DB25 Pin Adapter / Port Adapter Converter for GPS, PDA, PC, Modem Review

(More customer reviews)This item comes with absolutely no instructions for installation. The enclosed CD contained drivers to many products and was equally useless. I only found the correct driver after I called a company whose README file was on the CD who no doubt had many calls from others about the same product. The company had no affiliation with the actual product but they were kind enough to help me identify the item and I was then able to install a driver.
The unit does work properly now that the correct driver is installed but I don't envy the mere mortal that purchases this device. It is ridiculous that there are no instructions. So in an effort to help anyone that has purchased this device (or plans to purchase it) here are the instructions to install the driver.
When the unit is plugged in identifies itself as USB SER! The unit has a barely legible HL-340 molded on the side of the DB9 connector. HL-340 is the part number and with that you can find the driver installation executable (HL-340.exe) for the device under the folder USB-232 on the USB driver mini CD that comes with the device.
Don't expect to tell Windows to search the CD for the device driver - it won't find it because the driver installation is an .exe file that you need to run manually first. Simply run USB-232\HL-340\HL-340.exe first and then plug the device in.
After connecting the device, Windows will prompt you to install the driver. Follow the usual Windows prompts to install the driver software automatically (since the driver software was already installed on the system in the previous step). The driver identifies itself as USB Serial CH340 to add further confusion.
You will get warnings about the driver not having passed Windows Logo testing. You can ignore those warnings and install the driver anyway.
The com port should appear in the com port menus of whatever software that tries to use a com port - in my system it appeared as COM7 and this will probably vary on other systems.
Once the device is installed it works properly so I can't know it from that standpoint. It was just an ordeal to get it working. I hope that this helps someone.

I am using it with WinXP Service Pack 2, and it communicates great with a complex serial interface to an unusual piece of electronics I have, so its very compatible with "real" serial ports, unlike some other adapters I have tried that seem to only work with modems or PDA docks. The adapter as shipped is actually a small 1"x1.5"x3" box connected to your computer with a 3' USB cable that can be unplugged from it.
